Elkhead Reservoir State Park, CO, United States
The park is about a 15 to 20 minute drive east of Craig, Colorado on US Highway 40, then north on Moffat County Road 29 to the reservoir. From Steamboat Springs it is roughly a 50 mile, one hour drive west on US 40, a straightforward highway route without major tunnels but with rolling grades suitable for most RVs. From Denver, plan on about 200 miles and four to four and a half hours via I-70 and US 40 over Rabbit Ears Pass, where RV drivers should expect a sustained climb, possible wind, and winter chain or traction laws. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Yampa Valley Regional Airport in Hayden, about 30 miles east of the park.
Late May through September is the prime window for RV travel, with reliable warm weather, open campgrounds, and full boating access on the reservoir. July and August deliver the warmest water for swimming and paddling, but also the busiest weekends, so reservations are recommended. Early June and September are excellent shoulder-season options for quieter campsites, better fishing, and cooler driving conditions over mountain passes. Winter visits are limited to day use and ice fishing when conditions allow, with campgrounds closed and services reduced.

Boating is the signature activity at Elkhead, with two boat ramps providing access for motorboats, ski boats, kayaks, and paddleboards. The reservoir supports water skiing, wakeboarding, and wakeless zones closer to shore. All motorized and trailered boats must pass an aquatic nuisance species inspection before launching.
Elkhead Reservoir is one of northwest Colorado's top warmwater fisheries, known for smallmouth bass, northern pike, crappie, and stocked rainbow trout. Anglers fish from boats, float tubes, and the shoreline near the dam and coves. A Colorado fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older.
A designated swim beach on the reservoir offers sandy shoreline, picnic tables, and easy water access for families. Nearby day-use areas include shaded picnic sites and vault toilets. Swimming is at your own risk with no lifeguards on duty.
The park's two developed campgrounds, Bears Ears and Pronghorn, offer a mix of electric and basic sites with picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets. Many sites sit within walking distance of the water and accommodate trailers and motorhomes. Reservations are strongly recommended for summer weekends.
The sagebrush, wetlands, and aspen pockets around Elkhead Reservoir support pronghorn, mule deer, elk in shoulder seasons, waterfowl, and raptors including osprey and bald eagles. Early mornings and evenings from the shoreline or park roads offer the best viewing. Bring binoculars and stay a respectful distance from all wildlife.
When the reservoir freezes solid in winter, it becomes a regional ice-fishing destination for pike, trout, and perch. Access is day-use only with campgrounds closed, so plan to base out of Craig or nearby. Always check ice conditions and CPW regulations before heading out.
Dinosaur National Monument is about 90 miles west via US 40, making an easy day trip or overnight side journey from Elkhead. The monument features a working quarry wall of Jurassic dinosaur fossils, scenic river canyons, and pullouts accessible to most RVs. Check road conditions and tour hours on the NPS site before you go. nps.gov/dino/
