Best time to visit Evangola State Park

Late June through early September is the prime window, when the campground is fully open, Lake Erie is warm enough for swimming, and beach and lifeguard services are active. July and August bring the warmest weather and the busiest weekends, so midweek stays are easier to book. Late May and September are good shoulder options for cooler nights, fewer bugs, and quieter sites, though some services scale back. Winter closes most camping amenities, though the grounds can still be used for day-use activities like cross-country skiing when there is snow cover.

Things to do at Evangola State Park

  • Evangola Beach on Lake Erie Easy
    RV parking available

Evangola's natural sand swimming beach is the park's signature attraction and one of the largest on New York's Lake Erie shore. Lifeguards are on duty in summer, and the nearby day-use lot accommodates tow vehicles once the RV is set up at the campground.

  • Nature and Hiking Trails Easy
    RV parking available

Short, mostly level trails loop through mixed hardwood forest, open meadows, and the bluff edge above Lake Erie. They offer accessible walks well suited for families camping in RVs, with trailheads near the main day-use area.

  • Lakeside Picnicking and Pavilions
    RV parking available

Reservable pavilions and scattered picnic tables sit on bluffs and lawns overlooking Lake Erie. It is a convenient spot for a shore-side lunch during a travel day, with large paved lots that can handle tow vehicles.

  • Fishing on Lake Erie Easy
    RV parking available

The eastern Lake Erie shoreline is a well-known fishery for smallmouth bass, walleye, yellow perch, and steelhead in season. Anglers can cast from shore within the park or launch at nearby ramps in Sunset Bay and Cattaraugus Creek.

  • Playfields and Recreation Areas Easy
    RV parking available

Open sports fields, a playground, and courts give RV families space to spread out beyond the campsite. The recreation complex is a short walk from most campsite loops.

  • Winter Day Use Moderate

When snow conditions allow, the park's open fields and trails are used for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding. The campground is closed in winter, so this is a day-trip activity for RVers staying at year-round parks in the region.

  • Day Trip to Chautauqua Wine Country

Evangola is a handy base for exploring the Lake Erie Wine Trail, which runs along Route 5 and Route 20 through Chautauqua County. Several wineries and farm stands are within a short drive of the park entrance.

Sarah was a wonderful host. It was so easy to communicate with her and she was always quick to respond. The camper had everything you needed and she informed you of what you would need as the guest. It was easy to get the camper and it was fun to have and easy to pull, to bad we were only using it for a quick trip just for sleeping. I would recommend the camper to anyone.

What a wonderful and helpful person, Sarah was. Sarah gave us a complete run down inside and out on all aspects of the Tab 400 - we set off on our trip with full confidence and we were not disappointed. Sarah's Tab is immaculate and we so enjoyed the 3 nights. We will be repeat customers.

How to get to Evangola State Park

The park sits along Route 5 on the Lake Erie shoreline, about a 35 to 45 minute drive southwest of Buffalo and roughly 20 minutes northeast of Dunkirk. From the east, most RVers exit the I-90 New York State Thruway at Silver Creek or Irving and follow local routes north to Route 5; watch for low rural bridges and posted weight limits on secondary roads, and prefer the Thruway and Route 5 for larger rigs. The closest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF). There are no mountain passes or tunnels on the main approach, but lake-effect snow can affect travel in late fall and winter.
