The seasonal Back Bay Tram is the easiest way to reach False Cape without a long hike or bike ride. It departs from Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and carries visitors through the refuge and into the park with interpretive commentary. Reservations are required and the tram operates on a limited spring and fall schedule.
False Cape offers six miles of undeveloped Atlantic beach with no roads, buildings, or crowds. Visitors can swim, surf fish, shell, and beachcomb in a genuinely wild setting. There are no lifeguards or facilities, so come prepared.
Wash Woods is the remnant of a late-1800s community built largely from shipwreck timbers, with a cemetery and a weathered church steeple still standing among the dunes. The site is reached by hiking or biking on interior sand trails. Interpretive signs explain the settlement's history.
More than seven miles of sandy multi-use trails run through maritime forest, dune meadows, and along the bay. Biking is the most efficient way to explore, though deep soft sand in places makes fat tires helpful. All visitors must pack in water and supplies.
False Cape offers primitive hike-in or bike-in campsites on both the bay and ocean sides of the park. Sites have no water, no hookups, and no vehicle access, making them among the most remote campsites on the East Coast. Reservations through Virginia State Parks are required.
The park lies on the Atlantic Flyway and hosts more than 300 bird species, plus deer, river otters, feral hogs, and nesting loggerhead sea turtles. Spring and fall migrations are especially productive. Binoculars and long lenses are recommended.
Kayakers and canoeists can paddle the calm, shallow waters of Back Bay to reach the park's bayside landings and campsites. Launch points are available at the wildlife refuge and nearby Sandbridge. Watch for strong winds that can build quickly across the open bay.
Taylor was a great host and had an awesome RV. They provided a detailed overview of the RV when we picked it up and had us on the road on the family trip! The RV size and layout was perfect for our family of 5, with the bunkroom being a nice space for the kids own room. The kitchen had everything we needed and they had the small touches that made a huge difference (bag of charcoal). Thank you for a great trip!

False Cape State Park, VA, United States
The park sits at the southern end of Sandbridge in Virginia Beach, reached via Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge at the end of Sandpiper Road, roughly 25 miles and 45 minutes from central Virginia Beach and about 40 miles from Norfolk. There is no vehicle road into the park itself, so RVs must be parked at the Little Island Park or refuge lot, and visitors continue on foot, by bike, by boat, or on the seasonal Back Bay Tram. Sandpiper Road is narrow with residential traffic and tight turnarounds, so large Class A motorhomes and long fifth wheels should use caution. Norfolk International Airport is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers.
