Late May through September is the prime window for RV travel, when daytime highs are mild, the lake is fully open for boating and fishing, and all campground loops are in service. July and August bring the North American monsoon, with afternoon thunderstorms that cool the forest but can produce brief heavy rain. Shoulder months of April, May, and October offer fewer crowds and cooler nights, though overnight freezes are possible. Winter visits are possible since the park remains open year-round, but snow, ice, and cold temperatures are common at this elevation.
Cold with possible snow; park open year-round but expect limited services
Winter conditions continue; occasional snow
Cool and variable; overnight freezes common
Pleasant days, cold nights; windy afternoons
Ideal shoulder season; dry and mild

Fool Hollow Lake is a 150-acre reservoir stocked with rainbow trout, walleye, channel catfish, largemouth bass, and sunfish. Shoreline access and fishing piers make it friendly for all ages, and an Arizona fishing license is required. azstateparks.com/fool-hollow
A paved boat ramp provides access to the lake for motorboats, kayaks, and canoes, with a posted low wake speed limit that keeps the water calm. The ramp area has pull-through parking suitable for vehicles with trailers. azstateparks.com/fool-hollow
Short interpretive and shoreline trails wind through ponderosa pine forest around the reservoir, offering easy walking and birdwatching opportunities. Trailheads are within walking distance of most camp loops. azstateparks.com/fool-hollow
The lake's wildlife islands and wetland edges attract great blue herons, osprey, bald eagles in winter, and migrating waterfowl. Binoculars and a field guide are recommended for the early-morning hours. fs.usda.gov/recarea/asnf/recarea/?recid=44709
The Fool Hollow Day Use Area offers group picnic ramadas with tables, grills, and restrooms under large pines. It is a convenient stop for RVers not staying overnight. fs.usda.gov/recarea/asnf/recarea/?recid=44753
The park's high elevation and distance from major city light domes make it a solid spot for casual stargazing. Summer nights often reveal the Milky Way overhead after monsoon clouds clear.
The nearby Mogollon Rim offers scenic overlooks, forest drives, and trailheads within an hour of the campground. Woods Canyon Lake and the communities of Pine and Strawberry make popular half-day excursions from a Fool Hollow base camp. fs.usda.gov/recarea/asnf/recarea/?recid=44709

Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area, AZ, United States
The park sits about 2 miles north of US 60 off State Highway 260 in Show Low, Arizona. From Phoenix, the drive is roughly 175 miles and about 3.5 hours via US 60, which climbs through the Salt River Canyon with steep grades, tight curves, and switchbacks that require low-gear descents and careful braking in larger RVs. From Flagstaff, expect about 2.5 hours east via I-40 to Holbrook and SR 77 south, a gentler route preferred by big-rig drivers. The nearest commercial airports for fly-and-rent trips are Show Low Regional Airport for small aircraft and Phoenix Sky Harbor International for major service.
