Late spring through early fall, roughly May to October, offers the best conditions for RV travel, with warm weather, a fully open campground, and active swim beach and boating access. Summer weekends can fill up quickly with in-state visitors, so midweek stays are easier to book. Shoulder seasons in May and October bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and excellent fall color across the Appalachian foothills. Winter travel is possible but limited, as some facilities close seasonally and hilly access roads can be slick after snow or ice.

Forked Run Lake is the centerpiece of the park and is open to boats with electric motors or gas motors at idle speed. A boat ramp near the campground gives RVers easy access for kayaks, canoes, and small fishing boats.
The park features an unguarded public swim beach on Forked Run Lake with a sandy shoreline and shallow entry. It is a short walk or drive from the campground and has nearby parking suitable for tow vehicles.
The lake is stocked and managed for bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish, making it a reliable spot for shore and boat anglers. An Ohio fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older.
This short woodland loop traces the edge of Forked Run Lake with views of the water through mature hardwoods. It is a good leg-stretcher from the campground for RV travelers with dogs or kids.
The adjacent Shade River State Forest offers additional hiking, hunting, and scenic drives through rugged Appalachian terrain. Access roads are narrow and better suited to exploring by tow vehicle rather than a full-size RV.
The park sits minutes from the Ohio River Scenic Byway, a winding route along the river that passes small historic towns, overlooks, and river landings. It is a classic day trip by car from the campground.
Shaded picnic areas with tables and grills overlook the lake near the day-use parking lot. Shelters are available for group outings and can be reserved in advance.

Forked Run State Park, OH, United States
Forked Run State Park sits along State Route 124 in Meigs County, about 35 miles southeast of Athens and roughly 90 miles (about 2 hours) from Charleston, West Virginia. From Columbus, Ohio, the drive is about 110 miles and takes around 2.5 hours via US-33 and State Route 124. RV drivers should be aware that SR 124 is a narrow, winding river road with rolling grades and limited passing zones, so large rigs should plan for a slower pace and avoid travel after dark. The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent travelers are John Glenn Columbus International (CMH) and Yeager Airport in Charleston, WV (CRW).
