Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, ND, United States
The park sits along ND Highway 1806 just south of Mandan, about a 10 to 15 minute drive from downtown Bismarck via the Memorial Bridge. Bismarck is roughly 200 miles (about 3 hours) west of Fargo on Interstate 94 and about 100 miles (roughly 1.5 hours) east of Dickinson. The approach roads are paved and relatively flat with no tunnels or steep mountain passes, making access straightforward for large RVs, though prairie crosswinds along I-94 can affect high-profile vehicles. Bismarck Airport (BIS) is the closest airport for fly-and-rent travelers.
Late May through September offers the most comfortable weather for RV travel, with warm days, long daylight hours, and full access to living-history tours, the Custer House, and On-A-Slant Village. July and August are peak season with the warmest temperatures but also the busiest campground. Shoulder months of May and September bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and pleasant hiking along the bluffs above the Missouri River. Winter visits are limited because cold, snow, and closed facilities restrict most park programming.

On-A-Slant Village is a reconstructed Mandan earth-lodge settlement located near the confluence of the Heart and Missouri Rivers. The site was a former Mandan settlement estimated to have included about 75 earthlodges and perhaps 1,000 residents, and had likely existed for more than two centuries before a smallpox epidemic decimated the population. Several earthlodges have since been reconstructed on the site, and interpretive tours offer an introduction to historic Mandan culture. nps.gov/places/on-a-slant-village.htm
Guided living-history tours of the reconstructed Custer House and Historic Fort Lincoln cavalry post. The fort became one of the largest and most important posts on the Northern Plains, housing some 650 men at its peak. Living history tours of Historic Fort Lincoln and the Custer House are available throughout the summer season. nps.gov/places/fort-abraham-lincoln-state-park.htm
The park visitor center houses exhibits interpreting Mandan, military, and Lewis and Clark history. Visitors can relax at the coffee shop and peruse the gift shop and museum. It also serves as the starting point for most park tours. nps.gov/places/fort-abraham-lincoln-state-park.htm
A network of hiking paths climbs the bluffs above the Missouri River and connects the Infantry Post blockhouses with the Cavalry Square. The park boasts numerous outdoor activities, including hiking and various events and outdoor performances hosted throughout the year. The park is a recognized site along the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. On-A-Slant Village is a High Potential Historic Site on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. When Meriwether Lewis and William Clark came upon the ruins, they were already heavily deteriorated. nps.gov/places/on-a-slant-village.htm
