Late spring through early fall, roughly May through September, brings the driest and mildest weather for walking the fort grounds and forested trails. July and August typically deliver the warmest, sunniest days and the best viewing conditions across the Columbia River mouth. Shoulder months like June and September are quieter and pleasant for RV travelers who want to avoid peak coastal traffic. Winter visits are possible but often wet, windy, and foggy, with slick interpretive paths.
Wet and windy; interpretive center may have limited hours
Cool and rainy; storms possible on the coast
Showery; trails can be muddy
Mild with lingering showers
Pleasant shoulder season for RV travel
Coastal fog common in mornings
Peak season; expect busy weekends
Warmest and driest month
Excellent shoulder-season visits
Rainfall increases; still pleasant between storms
Wet and stormy; check road and bridge advisories
Wettest month; high winds possible on Astoria-Megler Bridge
A self-guided interpretive walk winds through the historic fort and past its preserved gun batteries. Signage details the area's military, exploration, and settlement history. It is a flat, accessible route suitable for most visitors. nps.gov/places/fort-columbia-historical-state-park.htm
The park's interpretive center houses exhibits on the area's early exploration, fur trade, and western settlement. It provides context for the Chinook Indian Nation and the Lewis and Clark visit to Chinook Point. Seasonal hours apply. nps.gov/places/fort-columbia-historical-state-park.htm
The park offers miles of forested hiking trails through coastal woodlands above the Columbia River. Routes climb from the main day-use area to ridge viewpoints overlooking the river mouth. Expect roots, moderate grades, and damp conditions after rain. nps.gov/places/fort-columbia-historical-state-park.htm
Scenic viewpoints along the fort's bluff look out across the mouth of the Columbia River toward Astoria and the Pacific. The vantage points are excellent for photography and ship-watching. Benches and interpretive panels are placed along the way. nps.gov/places/fort-columbia-historical-state-park.htm
The park is a productive spot for bird watching and wildlife viewing along the lower Columbia estuary. Bald eagles, shorebirds, and deer are commonly seen from trails and overlooks. Bring binoculars for best results. nps.gov/places/fort-columbia-historical-state-park.htm
Short trails lead down to secluded beaches along the Columbia River shoreline below the fort. These quiet coves are a good spot for beachcombing and tidepool exploration. Footing can be uneven and slippery at lower tides. nps.gov/places/fort-columbia-historical-state-park.htm
The day-use area offers picnic tables among the historic barracks and parade ground. It is an easy, level stop well suited to a midday break for RV travelers on US 101. Restrooms are available on site. nps.gov/places/fort-columbia-historical-state-park.htm

Fort Columbia Historical State Park, WA, United States
Fort Columbia sits directly on U.S. Highway 101 about 2 miles east of Chinook and around 10 miles west of Naselle, Washington. From Astoria, Oregon, it is roughly a 15 minute drive north across the Astoria-Megler Bridge, a long, high, and often windy span that RV drivers should cross cautiously in gusty conditions. Portland, Oregon is about 2.5 hours south via US 30 and US 101, while Seattle is roughly a 3.5 to 4 hour drive via I-5 and SR 4 through winding rural terrain. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Portland International Airport (PDX).
