Late spring through early fall is generally the most comfortable window for RV travel, with wildflowers peaking in April and May and cooler mountaintop temperatures providing relief from the Georgia lowlands in summer. October is a standout for fall color across the Cohutta and Blue Ridge ridgelines, though weekends draw heavy leaf-peeper traffic. Shoulder seasons in March and November offer quieter campgrounds and open trails, but RV travelers should watch for cold nights and occasional mountain storms. Winter stays are possible, though higher elevations can see ice and brief snow on access roads.

The Stone Wall Trail is a short loop atop Fort Mountain leading to the 855-foot prehistoric rock wall that gives the park its name. The paved and dirt path also passes a stone observation tower and offers long-range views into the Great Valley. Trailhead parking accommodates shorter RVs and tow vehicles. gastateparks.org/FortMountain
Fort Mountain Lake is a 17-acre mountaintop lake with a swimming beach, picnic area, and seasonal boat rentals. Non-motorized boating, fishing, and lakeside walks are popular with families. Day-use parking is near the campground loop.
The Gahuti Trail is an 8.2-mile loop circling the upper mountain through hardwood forest, rock outcrops, and seasonal streams. It is the park's signature backpacking route and offers solitude even on busy weekends. Start from the overlook parking area near the campground.
Fort Mountain maintains more than 25 miles of singletrack and multi-use trails built for mountain bikers, with routes ranging from flowy intermediate loops to technical backcountry descents. Trailheads include dedicated parking for vehicles with bike racks. Trails are shared with equestrians in some areas.
The Old Fort Overlook provides one of the park's best long-range views west across the Great Valley toward the Cumberland Plateau. A short paved walk from the parking area reaches the vista, making it accessible for most visitors. The lot is large enough for tow vehicles and smaller motorhomes.
Big Rock Nature Trail is a 0.7-mile loop that drops to a scenic overlook of a seasonal cascade and rocky bluff. Interpretive signage highlights the upland forest ecology. Trailhead parking is near the main campground entrance.
The park is a convenient base for exploring the adjacent Cohutta Wilderness in Chattahoochee National Forest, including Lake Conasauga, Georgia's highest lake. Gravel forest service roads reach several trailheads, though larger RVs should stage at the park and use a tow vehicle. Drives showcase waterfalls, balds, and old-growth hemlock groves.

Host was very nice and easy to rent from. They had everything you would need stocked in the camper, and the camper itself was very clean and organized.

Fort Mountain State Park, GA, United States
The park is about 8 miles east of Chatsworth, Georgia, via steep and winding Highway 52, which climbs the face of Fort Mountain in a series of sharp switchbacks; large Class A motorhomes and long fifth wheels should plan their ascent carefully and use low gear. Atlanta is roughly 90 miles south, about a 2 hour drive via I-75 and GA-52, and Chattanooga, Tennessee is around 60 miles northwest, about 1.5 hours. Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA) is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers, with Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) offering more flight options about 2 hours south. RVers should avoid approaching via narrow forest service roads and stick to GA-52 for the safest grade.
