Fred Henne Territorial Park, NT, Canada
Fred Henne sits just off Highway 3 at the edge of Yellowknife, opposite the Yellowknife Airport (YZF), making it an easy fly-and-rent option for RV travellers. Driving in, the park is roughly 1,500 km (about 17 to 18 hours) north of Edmonton, Alberta via Highways 43, 35, and 1, then Highway 3 from Enterprise through Behchoko to Yellowknife. Highway 3 is fully paved and suitable for large RVs, but fuel stops are spaced far apart, wildlife (especially bison) is frequent on the road, and gravel-patched frost-heave sections can be rough, so reduce speed and allow extra travel time. There are no mountain passes or tunnels, but RVers should cross the Mackenzie River on the Deh Cho Bridge and plan for long unserviced stretches between communities.
The best time to visit Fred Henne is from mid-June through late August, when daytime highs are warm, the beach and lake are swimmable, and daylight stretches close to 20 hours around the summer solstice. July is typically the warmest and busiest month, so reservations are recommended. Late August and early September bring fewer crowds, cooler nights, and a chance at early aurora viewing as darkness returns. Shoulder months can see freezing nights and sudden weather changes, so RV travellers should be prepared for cold-weather camping outside the peak summer window.

Long Lake Beach is a sandy day-use beach within Fred Henne Territorial Park and one of Yellowknife's most popular swimming spots. It features a gradual sandy entry, picnic areas, and washrooms, and is walkable from the campground loop.
The Prospector's Trail is an interpretive loop hike inside the park that travels across classic Canadian Shield bedrock, through boreal forest, and past small ponds. Numbered posts highlight geology, plants, and mining history, and the trailhead has parking suitable for RVs.
The Ingraham Trail (Highway 4) begins near Fred Henne and heads east to a string of lakes, waterfalls, and trailheads including Cameron Falls and Hidden Lake Territorial Park. It is a scenic day drive or short tow-vehicle outing from the campground.
Old Town Yellowknife is the historic heart of the city on Great Slave Lake, about 10 minutes' drive from the park. Visitors can climb Bush Pilots Monument for panoramic views, browse local galleries, and eat at waterfront restaurants.
The Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre is the territorial museum of the Northwest Territories, located a short drive from the park in Yellowknife. Exhibits cover Indigenous cultures, northern natural history, and the region's mining and aviation heritage.
Yellowknife lies beneath the auroral oval, making Fred Henne one of the most accessible places in Canada to see the northern lights in late summer and early fall. Campers can watch from dark sites along Long Lake or drive a few minutes out the Ingraham Trail for darker skies.
Long Lake offers calm water for canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding right from the park's beach and boat launch. Anglers can try for northern pike and lake whitefish with a valid NWT fishing licence.
