Fred Henne Territorial Park, NT, Canada

How to get to Fred Henne Territorial Park

Fred Henne sits just off Highway 3 at the edge of Yellowknife, opposite the Yellowknife Airport (YZF), making it an easy fly-and-rent option for RV travellers. Driving in, the park is roughly 1,500 km (about 17 to 18 hours) north of Edmonton, Alberta via Highways 43, 35, and 1, then Highway 3 from Enterprise through Behchoko to Yellowknife. Highway 3 is fully paved and suitable for large RVs, but fuel stops are spaced far apart, wildlife (especially bison) is frequent on the road, and gravel-patched frost-heave sections can be rough, so reduce speed and allow extra travel time. There are no mountain passes or tunnels, but RVers should cross the Mackenzie River on the Deh Cho Bridge and plan for long unserviced stretches between communities.

Best time to visit Fred Henne Territorial Park

The best time to visit Fred Henne is from mid-June through late August, when daytime highs are warm, the beach and lake are swimmable, and daylight stretches close to 20 hours around the summer solstice. July is typically the warmest and busiest month, so reservations are recommended. Late August and early September bring fewer crowds, cooler nights, and a chance at early aurora viewing as darkness returns. Shoulder months can see freezing nights and sudden weather changes, so RV travellers should be prepared for cold-weather camping outside the peak summer window.
