Late June through August is the peak season, with warm days suited to swimming at the lake beach, paddling, and camping. September and early October bring comfortable temperatures, smaller crowds, and strong fall foliage across the surrounding hardwoods, which is ideal for RV travel. May and early June are a good shoulder window for hiking and fishing, though nights remain cool. Winters are cold and snowy, and most camping facilities close outside the standard camping season.

  • Park Hiking and Multi-Use Trails Easy
    RV parking available

The park has several miles of wooded multi-use trails looping around Gilbert Lake, Ice Pond, and Twin Fawns Lake. Routes are mostly easy to moderate on rolling terrain and are shared with mountain bikers in the warm months and cross-country skiers in winter.

  • Fishing at Gilbert Lake and Ice Pond Easy

Anglers fish Gilbert Lake and the smaller Ice Pond for panfish, bass, and stocked trout. A valid New York State freshwater fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older.

  • Day Trip to Cooperstown Easy

Cooperstown sits about 45 minutes north of the park and is home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the Fenimore Art Museum, and the Glimmerglass State Park shoreline on Otsego Lake. It makes a convenient full-day excursion from a Gilbert Lake basecamp.

  • Winter Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing Moderate

When the campground is closed for the season, the park remains open for day use and its trail network is popular for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Trails are ungroomed and travel through quiet forest on rolling terrain.

We had an incredible time with our AirStream rental from Joseph. He delivered it to our home and picked it up from there. We never moved the RV... it served as an overflow bedroom for a family reunion. I highly recommend this rental. It was new, clean and Joe was on time and great about communicating with us and providing instructions. We will rent again!

How to get to Gilbert Lake State Park

The park sits off County Route 12 near Laurens, roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive from Oneonta and about 45 minutes south of Cooperstown. From the New York State Thruway, travelers typically exit at Exit 25A onto I-88 and follow it to the Oneonta area, then take NY Route 23 and local county roads to the park. The approach roads are rural, rolling two-lane highways with some steep grades and tight turns near the park entrance, so RV drivers should take the posted truck routes and avoid shortcuts on narrow town roads. The closest commercial airports for fly-and-rent trips are Albany International Airport (ALB), about two hours east, and Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR), about two hours northwest.
