July and August are the prime months, when the lake is warm enough for swimming and the beach and day-use areas are in full operation. Flush toilets in the campground and day-use area are open from late March to the end of October, making late spring and early fall good shoulder seasons for RVers seeking quieter sites and cooler driving weather. Anglers often prefer spring, fall and winter, when rainbow, cutthroat and Dolly Varden trout fishing is at its best. The park is open year-round with limited services in the off-season, so winter visits are possible but expect reduced facilities.

The park's designated swimming area sits along a sandy beach on Cowichan Lake. The water is warm in summer and the sandy beach has a designated swimming area identified by swim buoys, with access via the day-use area. There are no lifeguards on duty in BC Parks. bcparks.ca/gordon-bay-park/
Cowichan Lake offers some of Vancouver Island's best freshwater fishing right from the park. The lake is known for spectacular freshwater fishing in the spring, fall and winter, when anglers can be challenged by rainbow, cutthroat and Dolly Varden trout. A provincial freshwater licence is required. bcparks.ca/explore/parkpgs/gordon_bay/index.html
Cowichan Lake is a popular destination for motorized water sports. Waterskiing and windsurfing are popular activities on the lake, and a boat launch is located near the day-use parking lot. Waterskiers and windsurfers must remain outside the swim buoys. bcparks.ca/gordon-bay-park/
Paddlers can launch directly from the park's beach area. Canoeing and kayaking can be enjoyed on Cowichan Lake, with a boat launch located northeast of the day-use parking lot. The sheltered bay offers calmer water for beginners before opening into the main lake. bcparks.ca/gordon-bay-park/
Short interpretive trails wind through the park's Douglas-fir forest down to the lakeshore. Gordon Bay has a number of short, in-park trails that lead to the lake. Trails are easy and family-friendly. bcparks.ca/explore/parkpgs/gordon_bay/index.html
The park's mixed forest and lakeshore habitat support diverse wildlife. Birdwatchers often see juncos, Stellar's jays and chestnut-backed chickadees, as well as mergansers and golden eye ducks, while black bears, Roosevelt elk, black-tail deer, beaver, raccoons and cougars can all be spotted in the park. bcparks.ca/gordon-bay-park/
The park's central day-use zone is built for families and large groups. The large day-use and picnic area includes picnic tables, a parking lot, adventure playground, amphitheatre and flush toilets. RVers can park nearby and walk in. bcparks.ca/explore/parkpgs/gordon_bay/index.html
An adjacent protected area showcases rare flora next door to the park. Adjacent to Gordon Bay Provincial Park is Honeymoon Bay Ecological Reserve, which protects a variety of rare and endangered plant species. Visitors should stay on marked paths to protect sensitive species. bcparks.ca/explore/parkpgs/gordon_bay/index.html

Gordon Bay Provincial Park, BC, Canada
The park is located 35 km northwest of Duncan on southern Vancouver Island, accessed via Highway 18 off Highway 1; travel 26 km west on Highway 18 to Lake Cowichan, then 14 km on South Shore Road. From Victoria the drive is roughly 90 minutes, and from the Nanaimo ferry terminals it is about 75 to 90 minutes. RVers should plan for the BC Ferries crossing from the mainland (Tsawwassen to Duke Point or Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay), check vehicle height and length restrictions on board, and use caution on the narrow, winding South Shore Road, which has limited shoulders and tight curves near the lakeshore. The closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Victoria International Airport (YYJ), with Nanaimo Airport (YCD) as another option.
