July and August are peak season and can be busy on weekends, especially at the beach and boat launch. Spring brings wildflowers in the restored prairie and fall delivers cool hiking weather with oak savanna color. Winter visits are possible for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when snow allows, though facilities are limited.

The park features a designated sand swimming beach on Lake Mendota with a roped-off area, picnic tables, and a bathhouse. It is the centerpiece of summer visits and one of the most accessible public beaches on the lake.
A network of roughly 8 miles of trails winds through prairie, oak savanna, and woodland. The Woodland Trail passes an effigy mound group and offers shaded walking, while prairie loops deliver open views and summer wildflowers.
The park includes a boat launch with parking for trailers, providing direct access to Lake Mendota for boating, sailing, and fishing. It is also a popular put-in for kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards.
Anglers target walleye, largemouth and smallmouth bass, northern pike, and panfish from the shoreline and from boats launched at the park. A valid Wisconsin fishing license is required.
The park protects an effigy mound group built by Indigenous peoples, including animal-shaped earthworks interpreted along the Woodland Trail. Visitors should stay on designated paths to protect the mounds.
Picnic areas with tables, grills, and shelters sit near the beach and overlook Lake Mendota. Reservable shelters are a popular option for family gatherings during the warm season.
In winter the park's trail system is used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when snow cover is sufficient. Trails are not groomed, so conditions vary with recent weather.
Ross was great to work with & the experience exceeded our expectations! He was very accommodating with pick up- we live out of state and ran into unexpected delays on our way to pick up. The rental was very clean, came stocked with anything we needed, and was a very pleasant experience. We will be repeat renters!

Governor Nelson State Park, WI, United States
The park sits about 10 miles northwest of downtown Madison and roughly 5 miles from Waunakee, with access via County Highway M off Highway 113. Drive time from Madison is about 20 minutes, from Milwaukee about 90 minutes via I-94, and from Chicago around 3 hours. RV drivers should note that the park entrance road and day-use lots are paved and generally accessible, but the day-use parking is not designed for large rigs with trailers, so arriving in a tow vehicle from a nearby campground is recommended. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Dane County Regional Airport (MSN) in Madison.
