Late May through early October is the best window, with mild daytime temperatures, open trails, and the best chance to see wild ponies grazing the balds. June brings blooming rhododendron and azalea, while September and October deliver crisp air and strong fall color across the high country. Summer weekends fill quickly at the campground, so shoulder weeks in May, September, and early October are ideal for RV travel. Winter visits are possible for day use, but snow and ice at elevation can close campsites and make mountain roads hazardous.

Massie Gap is the primary trailhead for reaching the high-elevation balds where feral ponies graze. A large gravel lot at the gap accommodates larger vehicles, and short walks lead up to open ridgelines with sweeping views. Hikers have a chance to spot horses in Grayson Highlands State Park.
The Rhododendron Trail climbs from Massie Gap through meadows and rock outcrops to connect with the Appalachian Trail. Expect wild ponies, panoramic views, and blooming shrubs in early summer. The trail provides one of the most popular AT access points in southwest Virginia.
This strenuous out-and-back links Grayson Highlands with the summit of Mount Rogers, Virginia's highest point. The route travels through spruce-fir forest typical of far northern latitudes and crosses open balds with long views.
The Twin Pinnacles Trail starts at the Visitor Center and loops to two rocky summits with views of Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain. The Visitor Center lot offers room for RVs and trailers.
Cabin Creek Trail is a loop hike from Massie Gap that descends to a series of cascades and waterfalls. Footing can be rocky and steep in places, so bring sturdy shoes.
The park visitor center interprets Appalachian mountain culture with exhibits on pioneer life, local music, and regional natural history. A cluster of restored log cabins nearby demonstrates 19th-century homestead living.
