April through June and September through October are the most comfortable months for RV travel, with mild temperatures, active wildlife, and open access to the selenite crystal digging area on the adjacent refuge. Summer brings hot, humid conditions with highs often in the 90s Fahrenheit and a higher risk of severe thunderstorms common to the southern Plains. Winters are mild but windy, and facilities are reduced. Shoulder seasons offer lower crowds and strong birding during migration.

The Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge next to the state park offers a designated public area where visitors can dig for hourglass-shaped selenite crystals unique to this salt flat. The crystal digging area is open seasonally, typically April through mid-October. A large gravel parking area at the trailhead accommodates RVs and tow vehicles.
Anglers target channel catfish, saugeye, hybrid striped bass, and white bass on this shallow prairie reservoir. A boat ramp and courtesy dock provide access, and the lake's open water is popular for small powerboats and kayaks.
This short interpretive walking trail inside the refuge winds through riparian woodland with interpretive signs and a chance to spot bald eagles in winter. The trailhead has a parking area suitable for most RVs and tow rigs.
A self-guided nature trail on the refuge offers close views of wetland birds including avocets, plovers, and sandpipers during migration. The trail is flat and family friendly, with parking near the refuge headquarters.
The park's designated swim area on Great Salt Plains Lake is a sandy, shallow shoreline popular in summer. Picnic tables and shade shelters are nearby, and a day-use parking area sits within walking distance of the campground loops.
A driving route through the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge provides windshield views of the salt flats, Sandpiper Pond, and observation platforms. The route is suitable for passenger vehicles and smaller RVs; larger rigs should check conditions before entering gravel sections.
Great Salt Plains is part of the Central Flyway and hosts tens of thousands of migrating waterfowl and shorebirds in spring and fall. Observation points and photo blinds around the refuge make it one of Oklahoma's premier birding destinations.

Great Salt Plains State Park, OK, United States
The park is reached via State Highway 38 near Jet, Oklahoma, roughly a 2 hour drive northwest of Oklahoma City and about 2.5 hours from Wichita, Kansas. Enid, Oklahoma, is the closest regional hub, about 45 minutes to the southeast, and Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City is the most practical fly-and-rent option. Roads into the park are flat and RV friendly with no mountain passes or tunnels, but drivers should watch for strong crosswinds on open prairie highways and be aware that the causeway across Great Salt Plains Lake may have posted weight or vehicle restrictions.
