Late spring (May) and early fall (mid-September through October) are generally the best months for RV travel, offering mild temperatures, open high-elevation roads, and vivid wildflower or foliage displays. Summer brings warm weather and full campground openings but also the heaviest crowds and traffic on the Cades Cove Loop and Newfound Gap Road. Winter access is more limited, with high-elevation roads closed seasonally and icy conditions possible on main routes. Shoulder seasons in April and early November reward flexible travelers with thinner crowds, though weather can shift quickly at elevation.
Kuwohi (Clingmans Dome) Road closed; most campgrounds closed; snow and ice possible on Newfound Gap Road
Kuwohi Road closed; most campgrounds closed; several secondary roads closed seasonally
Kuwohi Road typically closed through March 31; most campgrounds closed; variable mountain weather
Wildflower season; most seasonal roads and campgrounds begin reopening
Ideal shoulder season; all campgrounds typically open
Peak season begins; firefly event at Elkmont requires lottery
Peak crowds; afternoon thunderstorms common
Hot and humid in the lowlands; cooler at elevation
Pleasant weather; early fall color at high elevations
Peak fall foliage; expect heavy traffic and full campgrounds
Several campgrounds close for the season; Kuwohi Road closes December 1
Kuwohi Road closed; Cataloochee, Look Rock, Balsam Mountain, Abrams Creek, and Big Creek campgrounds closed
Cades Cove is an 11-mile one-way loop road through a broad valley famous for wildlife viewing and historic buildings. RVers can park at multiple pull-offs and at the Cades Cove Visitor Center near the midpoint of the loop. Expect slow traffic, especially in summer and fall. nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/cadescove.htm
Newfound Gap is the lowest drivable pass through the park and sits on the Tennessee and North Carolina state line at 5,046 feet. The large paved lot accommodates RVs and offers panoramic ridge views and direct access to the Appalachian Trail. nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/kuwohi-nfg.htm
Kuwohi is the highest point in the park at 6,643 feet, reached by a paved but steep half-mile walk from the parking area to a spiral observation tower. The access road is closed December 1 through March 31, and the lot can fill quickly in peak season. nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/kuwohi-nfg.htm
Laurel Falls is a 2.4-mile round-trip paved trail leading to an 80-foot waterfall, one of the most popular hikes in the park. The trailhead lot is small and fills early; larger RVs should arrive at off-peak times or use a tow vehicle. nps.gov/grsm/
The Oconaluftee area on the North Carolina side features a visitor center, the Mountain Farm Museum with historic log buildings, and frequent elk sightings in the adjacent fields. The paved lot accommodates RVs and is a good first stop when entering from Cherokee. nps.gov/grsm/
Sugarlands is the main Tennessee-side visitor center just inside the Gatlinburg entrance, with exhibits, a park film, and ranger information. The large paved lot is RV-accessible and connects to easy nature trails. nps.gov/grsm/
Deep Creek near Bryson City offers short, family-friendly trails to Juney Whank, Indian Creek, and Tom Branch Falls, plus summer tubing on the creek. The area has a day-use lot and an adjacent campground with sites that accommodate smaller RVs. nps.gov/grsm/
Cataloochee Valley is a remote North Carolina valley known for reintroduced elk and preserved historic structures. The access road is narrow, winding, and partially gravel, so it is not recommended for large RVs; day-trip in a tow vehicle instead. nps.gov/grsm/

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, United States
Main gateways are Gatlinburg and Townsend, Tennessee on the west side and Cherokee, North Carolina on the east side, with Knoxville, TN about an hour from Sugarlands Visitor Center and Asheville, NC roughly 90 minutes from Oconaluftee. RV drivers should expect steep grades, tight curves, and elevation gains on Newfound Gap Road (US 441), which crests at 5,046 feet. Commercial vehicles are prohibited on US 441/Newfound Gap Road and throughout the park, with the exception of the Gatlinburg Spur between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, which is the main RV-friendly corridor on the Tennessee side. For fly-and-rent trips, McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) near Knoxville is the closest major airport, with Asheville Regional (AVL) serving the North Carolina side.
