Best time to visit Greenfield State Park

Late June through August offers the warmest water and reliable swimming weather at Otter Lake, with daytime highs typically in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit. Early September is a strong shoulder season for RV travelers: campground demand eases after Labor Day, nights are cool, and bugs drop off. Late September into early October brings peak fall foliage across the Monadnock region, though nights can dip near freezing. Avoid planning an RV trip in winter, as the campground is closed and park roads are not maintained for camping.

Things to do at Greenfield State Park

  • Swim at the Otter Lake beach Easy
    RV parking available

Greenfield State Park has a sandy day-use beach on Otter Lake plus a separate beach reserved for registered campers. Shallow, protected water makes it a good swim spot for families, and picnic tables and restrooms are close to the main parking lot.

  • Paddle Otter Lake Easy
    RV parking available

Otter Lake is ideal for canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards thanks to restrictions on high-horsepower motorboats. A cartop boat launch near the day-use area lets paddlers access quiet coves and a wooded shoreline popular with loons and waterfowl.

  • Fish for bass and pickerel Easy
    RV parking available

Anglers can fish Otter Lake from shore or from small boats for largemouth bass, pickerel, and panfish. A valid New Hampshire fishing license is required for visitors age 16 and older.

  • Walk the park's woodland trails Easy
    RV parking available

Several easy trails wind through the pine and hemlock forest around the campground and lake, including a loop that touches a protected wetland. Most trails are short, flat, and well suited to casual hikers and families.

  • Climb Mount Monadnock Strenuous

Mount Monadnock in nearby Jaffrey is one of the most climbed peaks in the world, with open summit ledges and wide views across southern New Hampshire. The drive from Greenfield State Park takes about 30 to 40 minutes, and the main trailheads have parking large enough for tow vehicles.

  • Drive up Pack Monadnock at Miller State Park Easy

Miller State Park in Peterborough features an auto road to the 2,290-foot summit of Pack Monadnock with panoramic views. The auto road is best for tow vehicles and smaller RVs; large motorhomes should leave the rig at camp.

  • Visit downtown Peterborough Easy
    RV parking available

Peterborough sits about 15 minutes south of the park and offers local restaurants, bookshops, a farmers market, and the MacDowell arts community. It is a convenient provisioning stop for RV campers.

How to get to Greenfield State Park

Greenfield State Park sits off NH Route 136 in the town of Greenfield, about 35 miles west of Manchester (roughly a 45-minute drive) and 75 miles northwest of Boston (about 1 hour 45 minutes). From the south, most RV travelers follow US Route 3 or I-93 to NH Route 101 west through Peterborough, then north on NH Route 136. Roads in the area are two-lane rural highways with rolling hills, tight village centers, and some low tree canopy, so large motorhomes should plan routes in advance and avoid narrow back roads. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT), with Boston Logan (BOS) as a larger alternative.
