The Gwaii Haanas visitor season generally runs May through September, when weather is mildest and tour operators, Haida Gwaii Watchmen sites, and boat and floatplane charters are active. July and August offer the warmest, driest conditions and calmest seas for kayaking and boat tours, but they are also the busiest period. Shoulder months of May, June, and September bring fewer visitors and good wildlife viewing, though RV travelers should expect cool, wet, windy weather and reduced charter availability. Winter travel is not practical: services are closed and crossings on Hecate Strait are rough.

SGang Gwaay Llnagaay is a UNESCO World Heritage village site known for its standing Haida mortuary and memorial poles. Visits are made by boat or floatplane with a licensed operator and include time with the Haida Gwaii Watchmen. Access is weather-dependent and requires advance booking. parks.canada.ca/pn-np/bc/gwaiihaanas
Multi-day sea kayaking is a classic way to experience Gwaii Haanas, paddling protected inlets between ancient village sites and hot springs. Most trips launch from Moresby Camp or Rose Harbour with a guided operator. Experience in open-water paddling and tide planning is essential.
Gandll K'in Gwaay.yaay features natural geothermal pools overlooking the ocean and is a Haida Gwaii Watchmen site. The island is reached by tour boat, zodiac, or kayak as part of a Gwaii Haanas itinerary. Pools reopened after geothermal activity returned following a regional earthquake.
Five Haida Gwaii Watchmen sites welcome visitors during the summer season, including K'uuna Llnagaay (Skedans), T'aanuu Llnagaay, Hlk'yah GawGa (Windy Bay), Gandll K'in Gwaay.yaay, and SGang Gwaay. Watchmen share stories, cultural context, and site protocols. Site visits are typically limited to a small number of guests at a time.
Gwaii Haanas waters host humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, sea otters, and some of the largest seabird colonies on the BC coast. Guided boat tours from Sandspit and Daajing Giids run day trips into the northern portion of the reserve. Bring binoculars, layered rain gear, and a dry bag.
Licensed operators run day and multi-day zodiac and catamaran tours from Moresby Camp and Sandspit into Louise Island and northern Gwaii Haanas. These tours are the most accessible option for RV travelers staying on Graham or Moresby Island. Departures depend heavily on weather and sea state.
Before or after a Gwaii Haanas tour, RVers often base at Gray Bay on northern Moresby Island. A regionally significant coastal hiking trail is accessed by road at Gray Bay and connects a variety of beaches, with side trails leading to Sheldens Lagoon and Secret Cove, plus a popular frontcountry camping area and day-use site at Gray Bay itself. bcparks.ca/kunxalas-heritage-site-conservancy/

Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, BC, Canada
Gwaii Haanas has no road access, so RV travelers drive to Haida Gwaii and then join a boat or floatplane tour to reach the park. Haida Gwaii is served by scheduled air transportation from Vancouver and Prince Rupert and by BC Ferries between Prince Rupert and Skidegate. Most RVers drive Highway 16 (the Yellowhead) across northern BC to Prince Rupert, then take the BC Ferries sailing to Skidegate on Graham Island, a trip that typically takes seven to eight hours; mountain sections of Highway 16 include long grades, so check brakes, tire pressure, and fuel range before departure. For fly-and-rent trips, Sandspit Airport (YZP) on Moresby Island is the closest option, with a short ferry link to Graham Island.
