Best time to visit Haleakala National Park

April through May and September through early November offer the most comfortable mix of mild temperatures, lower rainfall, and smaller crowds than peak summer and winter holidays. Summer brings the warmest weather but also the busiest sunrise reservations and parking pressure at the summit. Winter can bring strong winds, cold nights near freezing at the summit, and heavier rain in Kipahulu, though the park stays open year round. RV travelers should aim for shoulder-season weekdays to ease parking at trailheads and viewpoints.

Things to do at Haleakala National Park

  • Haleakala Summit and Sunrise Viewing Easy
    RV parking available

Haleakala's summit rises to 10,023 feet at Pu'u'ula'ula and offers panoramic views above the clouds, celebrated for its sunrise. A sunrise reservation through Recreation.gov is required to enter the summit area before 7 a.m., and warm layers are essential year round. nps.gov/hale/planyourvisit/basicinfo.htm

  • Keonehe'ehe'e (Sliding Sands) Trail Strenuous
    RV parking available

The Sliding Sands Trail drops from the Haleakala Visitor Center into the crater floor through cinder cones and volcanic landscape. The trail is steep and sandy at high altitude, and rangers advise allowing about twice as much time to hike back out as it took to descend. nps.gov/thingstodo/moderate-hike-into-into-haleakala-crater.htm

  • Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls Moderate
    RV parking available

The Pipiwai Trail in the Kipahulu District climbs through rainforest and a bamboo forest to the 400-foot Waimoku Falls. The four-mile round-trip hike also passes Makahiku Falls about a half mile from the trailhead. nps.gov/hale/planyourvisit/kipahulu.htm

  • Hosmer Grove Nature Trail Easy
    RV parking available

The Hosmer Grove loop is a short, easy walk of about 0.6 miles through a mixed forest of introduced trees and native Hawaiian species such as the ohia lehua. The grove is a good place to spot native honeycreepers and other endemic birds. nps.gov/articles/000/plan-like-a-park-ranger-top-10-tips-for-visiting-haleakala-national-park.htm

  • Halemau'u Trail Overlooks Strenuous
    RV parking available

The Halemau'u Trail offers dramatic views down into the Ko'olau Gap and Haleakala Crater from its upper switchbacks. Day hikers often turn around at the crater rim for a strenuous out-and-back with some of the park's best volcanic vistas. nps.gov/hale/planyourvisit/hiking.htm

  • Kalahaku and Leleiwi Overlooks Easy
    RV parking available

These two roadside overlooks along Crater Road provide crater views without the crowds of the summit parking lots. Leleiwi sits at 8,840 feet and Kalahaku at 9,324 feet, and both are useful alternatives when higher lots are full. nps.gov/hale/planyourvisit/basicinfo.htm

  • Kuloa Point and Pools of Ohe'o Easy
    RV parking available

The short Kuloa Point loop in the Kipahulu District leads to coastal overlooks of the Pools of Ohe'o and the rocky Pacific shoreline. Swimming in the pools is often closed due to flash-flood risk, so check posted conditions at the visitor center. nps.gov/hale/planyourvisit/kipahulu.htm

  • Stargazing at the Summit Easy
    RV parking available

Haleakala's high elevation, dry air, and dark skies make it one of the premier stargazing sites in Hawaii. Summit overlooks are open at night, but temperatures drop near freezing and wind chill can be severe, so dress in heavy layers. nps.gov/hale/planyourvisit/basicinfo.htm

How to get to Haleakala National Park

From Kahului, the nearest city and airport hub, the Summit District entrance is about 38 miles and roughly 1.5 hours by road via Haleakala Highway and Crater Road, a steep, narrow route with tight switchbacks and significant elevation gain to 10,023 feet. The Kipahulu District sits about 60 miles from Kahului via the Hana Highway, a winding coastal road with more than 600 curves and many one-lane bridges that is not recommended for large motorhomes or towables. Fly-and-rent travelers typically use Kahului Airport (OGG) and pick up a smaller Class B or truck camper suited to Maui's narrow roads. There are no fuel stations inside the park, so top off before heading to the summit or down to Kipahulu.
