Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather and the best chance at sunny days on the south coast, making it ideal for beach time and tidepooling at low tide. July and August are peak season, so reservations fill quickly and sites should be booked well in advance. Shoulder months like May, early June, and September bring fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, and easier last-minute bookings, while winter is prime for storm watching and gray whale migration.

The main beach is a broad, sandy cove accessed by a short walk from the day-use parking area, framed by sea stacks and rocky outcrops. It is popular for beachcombing, surf play, kite flying, and watching sunsets over the Pacific.
Low tides expose rich tidepools along the rocky shelves at Harris Beach, home to sea stars, anemones, hermit crabs, and chitons. Time visits with a tide chart and watch for slippery rocks and incoming waves.
Bird Island, also known as Goat Island, is Oregon's largest offshore island and a designated National Wildlife Sanctuary visible from the beach and bluffs. It is a key nesting site for tufted puffins and other seabirds, best viewed with binoculars from shore.
The headlands at Harris Beach provide elevated views for spotting gray whales during their winter and spring migrations. Peak viewing windows are mid-December through early January and late March through May.
Just north of Harris Beach on U.S. 101, this 12-mile scenic corridor features overlooks, natural bridges, and short hikes to secluded beaches like Secret Beach and Whaleshead. Multiple pullouts have RV-friendly parking at larger trailheads.
A short trail in nearby Brookings leads to Chetco Point with panoramic Pacific views and access to small coves. It pairs well with a supply stop in town before returning to camp.
Azalea Park in Brookings is a city park famous for native azaleas that bloom in late spring and early summer. It offers picnic areas, paved paths, and a gentle stroll suitable for all ages.
We rented the Yankee Clipper for 6 nights and had an amazing camping trip. Two adults and two teenagers fit comfortably. We really appreciated the host leaving essentials like coffee, condiments, utensils, toilet paper and linens. Host was quick to communicate and made the experience easy and efficient. Thank you!!

Harris Beach State Park, OR, United States
Harris Beach sits directly on U.S. Highway 101 about 2 miles north of Brookings, Oregon, roughly 27 miles north of Crescent City, California (about 40 minutes) and 110 miles south of Coos Bay (about 2.5 hours). The approach on Highway 101 from the north winds through the Samuel H. Boardman corridor with curves and steep grades, so RV drivers should plan for slower travel and use pullouts for faster traffic. There are no tunnels on the direct approach, but coastal fog and cross winds along exposed headlands are common. The nearest commercial airports for fly-and-rent travelers are Del Norte County Regional Airport in Crescent City and Rogue Valley International in Medford, Oregon.
