Best time to visit Harris Beach State Park

Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather and the best chance at sunny days on the south coast, making it ideal for beach time and tidepooling at low tide. July and August are peak season, so reservations fill quickly and sites should be booked well in advance. Shoulder months like May, early June, and September bring fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, and easier last-minute bookings, while winter is prime for storm watching and gray whale migration.

How to get to Harris Beach State Park

Harris Beach sits directly on U.S. Highway 101 about 2 miles north of Brookings, Oregon, roughly 27 miles north of Crescent City, California (about 40 minutes) and 110 miles south of Coos Bay (about 2.5 hours). The approach on Highway 101 from the north winds through the Samuel H. Boardman corridor with curves and steep grades, so RV drivers should plan for slower travel and use pullouts for faster traffic. There are no tunnels on the direct approach, but coastal fog and cross winds along exposed headlands are common. The nearest commercial airports for fly-and-rent travelers are Del Norte County Regional Airport in Crescent City and Rogue Valley International in Medford, Oregon.
