Late May through mid-September is the prime window for RV trips, with warm days, swimmable lake temperatures, and full campground services. June and early July bring lush forests and lower mosquito pressure than midsummer wetlands. Fall foliage from late September into mid-October is excellent for hiking the Ice Age Trail with cooler nights and lighter crowds. Winter visits are possible for day use, but campground amenities are reduced and weather can shift quickly.

A long segment of the 1,200 mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail passes directly through Hartman Creek State Park, showcasing kettles, kames, and other glacial landforms. Trailhead parking inside the park accommodates trucks and most RVs, making it an easy day-hike base. nps.gov/iatr/index.htm
Hartman Lake's sandy swim beach is the park's centerpiece for summer day use. The adjacent picnic area has shelters, tables, and a large paved lot suitable for RVs and tow vehicles.
The park sits at the headwaters of the Crystal River and provides access to the Waupaca Chain O' Lakes, a string of 22 spring-fed lakes popular for kayaks, canoes, and small boats. Carry-in launches inside the park keep launch fees low for paddlers.
Hartman Creek has several miles of designated mountain bike trails plus quiet park roads that connect to rural cycling routes through Waupaca County farmland. Bike racks and trail parking sit near the campground entrance.
Hartman Creek and the park's kettle lakes support stocked trout, bass, and panfish, with shore fishing access at multiple points and a small boat launch on Hartman Lake. A Wisconsin fishing license is required for anyone 16 and older. dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/fishing
The park maintains a network of designated horse trails on its western side, with a dedicated horse trailer parking area and staging. Riders must purchase a Wisconsin State Trail Pass.
Within the park boundary, the historic Pope Farm preserves remnants of an early Waupaca County homestead and is a quiet stop for history-minded visitors. Interpretive signage explains the family's role in shaping the area before it became state land.
In winter, park trails are open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, with a portion typically groomed when snow allows. Day-use parking lots are plowed but the family campground is closed to RVs.

Hartman Creek State Park, WI, United States
The park is about 6 miles southwest of downtown Waupaca off State Highway 22 and County Trunk B, roughly a 35 to 45 minute drive from Stevens Point and about 1 hour 45 minutes from Milwaukee or 2 hours 45 minutes from Chicago. Roads in are paved two-lane state and county highways with no significant grades, tunnels, or low clearances, making access straightforward for larger RVs. Watch for tight turns on the final park road and tree-lined campground loops where overhead branches can affect tall rigs. Appleton International Airport (ATW) is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers, about an hour east, with Central Wisconsin (CWA) and Milwaukee Mitchell (MKE) as alternatives.
