July and August offer the warmest lake temperatures, the longest daylight, and the most reliable access to swimming, the boat launch, and the full day-use area. Late June and early September are good shoulder-season options for RV travellers looking for cooler nights and thinner crowds while the campground is still open. The campground gate closes mid-October, while trails remain accessible year-round. Winter visits are day-use only and gate access can be limited by snow.

The Margaret Falls nature trail is a short, self-guided walk through a lush cedar canyon to a tall waterfall on the west side of the park. A self-guided nature trail takes you from the outlet of Reinecker Creek to Margaret Falls. It is the park's signature short hike and suitable for most visitors. bcparks.ca/herald-park/nature-trail/
The Upper Canyon Trail climbs above the falls for elevated views over Shuswap Lake. The trail is about 2.5 km and has some rough sections with beautiful views of the lake from the Upper Canyon. Wear sturdy shoes and expect some uneven footing. bcparks.ca/herald-park/
Herald Park has a large sandy swimming beach on the Salmon Arm of Shuswap Lake. The swimming area is roped off with buoys to protect swimmers from motorboats, which are common on the lake. There are no lifeguards, so supervise children closely. bcparks.ca/herald-park/
The park's boat launch provides direct access to Shuswap Lake for motorboats, kayaks, and paddleboards. The park offers frontcountry camping, a boat launch, and a large day-use area. Shuswap Lake is a major destination for watersports and houseboating. bcparks.ca/herald-park/
Anglers can fish from shore or by boat for species common to the Shuswap system, including lake trout, rainbow trout, kokanee, and burbot. Anyone fishing in British Columbia must have an appropriate licence. Boat access from the park launch opens up a wide range of water to work. bcparks.ca/herald-park/
Herald Canyon is a rewarding stop for birders visiting the Shuswap. Herald Canyon is popular with birders as 70 bird species have been documented in the area. Bring binoculars and walk slowly along the nature trail for the best chances. bcparks.ca/herald-park/
Herald Park works well as a base for day trips around the Shuswap. The closest communities are Tappen, Canoe, Sorrento, and Salmon Arm. Each has cafes, farm stands, and waterfront parks worth a visit. bcparks.ca/herald-park/
This was an amazing experience. They were very easy to deal with, and quick to answer any questions we had. The camper has everything we needed and was extremely clean. I would definitely recommend.

Herald Provincial Park, BC, Canada
From Salmon Arm, the park is a drive of roughly 20 to 25 minutes west on the Trans-Canada Highway and then north on Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road. From Kamloops, plan on about 1 hour 30 minutes east on Highway 1, and from Kelowna around 2 hours north via Highways 97 and 1. Herald Park is 14 km east of the Trans-Canada Highway at Tappen, on the west shore of the Salmon Arm of Shuswap Lake. The access road is paved but narrow and winding in sections with a steep descent to the lake, so large RVs and trailers should take the grade slowly. Kelowna International Airport (YLW) is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips.
