Late May through early October is the prime window for RV travel, when the campground is fully open, trails are dry, and Sand Spring Lake beach is staffed. September and early October bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and strong Pocono fall foliage, making it a favorite shoulder season. July and August are warmest and busiest, so reservations should be made well in advance. Winter visits are possible for day use and limited camping, but expect snow, ice, and colder mountain conditions.

The Boulder Field is a 16-acre expanse of sandstone and conglomerate boulders at the north end of the park and a National Natural Landmark. A narrow, unpaved road and parking area serve the site, with a small day-use lot better suited to shorter RVs and tow vehicles. nps.gov/subjects/nnlandmarks/site.htm?Site=HIRU-PA
Shades of Death Trail is a classic Hickory Run hike that follows Sand Spring Run past old dams, cascades, and hemlock groves. The roughly 2-mile route has rocky footing and modest elevation change, and the main trailhead has room for standard vehicles.
Hawk Falls Trail is a short out-and-back hike to a scenic 25-foot waterfall on Hawk Run. The trail is less than a mile round trip, with a gravel trailhead lot along Route 534 that can fit trucks and small RVs.
Sand Spring Lake has a sandy swimming beach with restrooms, changing areas, and a snack concession in summer. Parking is ample and suitable for RVs and tow vehicles during beach season.
Orchard Trail is a gentle 1.5-mile loop through meadow and second-growth forest near the park office. It is a good warm-up hike for families and connects to the campground area.
Hickory Run State Park includes several stocked trout streams, including Hickory Run, Fourth Run, and Mud Run. Anglers need a current Pennsylvania fishing license and, for trout waters, a trout stamp.
In winter, several park trails and closed park roads are open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The day-use parking areas near the park office are plowed for winter visitors.

Hickory Run State Park, PA, United States
The park sits just off Interstate 80 at exit 274, about 25 miles west of Wilkes-Barre, 40 miles north of Allentown, and roughly 120 miles or a 2 to 2.5 hour drive from both Philadelphia and New York City. Most RVs reach the park easily via I-80 or the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-476), which has toll plazas sized for large vehicles. Drivers should be aware of long uphill grades on I-80 in both directions and watch for fog and winter ice on the Pocono plateau. The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent trips are Lehigh Valley International (ABE) about an hour south and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International (AVP) about 45 minutes north.
