Best time to visit Highline State Park

Late April through early June and September through October offer the most comfortable RV conditions, with daytime highs in the 60s to low 80s F and cool nights ideal for campground stays. Midsummer from mid-June through August brings reliable warm water for swimming and boating but frequent highs in the 90s, so shaded sites and awnings are valuable. Spring and fall are prime shoulder seasons for birding and hiking, and campground demand is lighter midweek. Winter is quiet, with cold nights and occasional snow, though the park remains open for day use and limited camping.

Things to do at Highline State Park

  • Boating and Water Sports on Highline Lake Easy
    RV parking available

Highline Lake is one of western Colorado's premier reservoirs for water skiing, wakeboarding, and personal watercraft. The main boat ramp has paved parking with space for trucks and trailer rigs, and a swim beach sits adjacent to the day-use area.

  • Mack Mesa Lake Paddling and Fishing Easy
    RV parking available

Mack Mesa is a smaller wakeless lake reserved for kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and quiet fishing. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout in cool months and offers a calm alternative to busy Highline Lake.

  • Highline Lake Loop Trail Easy
    RV parking available

This roughly 3.5-mile flat loop circles the main reservoir with wide, packed-gravel tread suitable for hiking and mountain biking. Interpretive signs highlight wetland birds, and the trailhead has RV-accessible parking near the visitor area.

  • Birdwatching on the Colorado Birding Trail Easy
    RV parking available

Highline Lake State Park is a designated stop on the Colorado Birding Trail and a regional hotspot for waterfowl, shorebirds, bald eagles, and white pelicans. Spring and fall migrations are the most productive times, and the shoreline trails provide easy viewing.

  • Swim Beach and Day-Use Area Easy
    RV parking available

A designated sandy swim beach on Highline Lake offers roped-off swimming, picnic shelters, and restrooms. The day-use lot has pull-through parking that accommodates RVs and trailers.

  • Day Trip to Colorado National Monument Easy

Colorado National Monument sits about 25 miles south and features Rim Rock Drive, a scenic road through red-rock canyons. RVers should note the monument has tunnels with height restrictions on Rim Rock Drive, so larger motorhomes should confirm clearances before entering. nps.gov/colm/index.htm

  • McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area Moderate

Adjacent to the park, McInnis Canyons offers sandstone canyons, the Ruby-Horsethief stretch of the Colorado River, and rock-art sites. Trailheads such as Rattlesnake Arches and Mee Canyon are accessible via high-clearance roads, with main access points reachable from standard tow vehicles staged at the campground.

When the phrase “above and beyond” was created , Shiloh was who they had in mind. Not only did Shiloh rent us his RV for a really important family reunion in Aurora (on the other side of the mountain range), he rented us his truck as well because our vehicle wouldn’t haul it. He truly went above and beyond to accommodate our trip, making sure we had everything we needed and checked in on us daily to make sure all was well. You are in good hands booking with him, he is a man of his word and I would be happy to business with him again. Thanks again Shiloh!!

How to get to Highline State Park

From Grand Junction, the park is about 20 miles northwest via I-70 to the Loma exit, then north on Highway 139 and local county roads, roughly a 25 to 30 minute drive. Salt Lake City is about 275 miles west on I-70, and Denver is about 250 miles east over several mountain passes, including Vail Pass at 10,662 feet, where steep 7 percent grades and runaway-truck ramps warrant low gears and cool brakes in larger RVs. Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT) is the nearest airport for fly-and-rent trips. Roads into the park are paved and RV-friendly with no low tunnels or tight switchbacks, making access straightforward for travel trailers and larger motorhomes.
