Late May through early October is the prime window for RV travel, when the campground, swimming pool, and restaurant are open and mountain roads are clear. June and July bring full-leaf forests, peak waterfall flow after spring rains, and comfortable highs in the 70s and 80s F. September and early October deliver vivid fall color with fewer crowds, though nights turn chilly. Winter is a true shoulder season: most facilities close, snow and ice are common on WV 20, and travel by RV is not recommended.

Potato Knob is a classic ridge-top hike leading to a rocky overlook of the Holly River valley. The trail climbs steadily through mixed hardwoods and is one of the park's signature viewpoints. Parking at the main trailhead complex accommodates standard tow vehicles.
Upper Falls is a scenic cascade reached by a forest trail that follows the Left Fork of the Holly River. The route passes ferns, hemlocks, and plunge pools that are popular for cooling off on summer hikes. The lower trailhead has day-use parking suitable for smaller RVs and tow vehicles.
Tecumseh Falls and nearby Shupe's Chute are short waterfall hikes in the heart of the park. The paths are relatively short but rocky and can be slick when wet. Trailhead parking is near the main park road.
The park operates a seasonal swimming pool with a bathhouse, along with tennis and basketball courts near the campground. The pool is usually open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Day-use parking is close to the campground loop.
The Left Fork of the Holly River and its tributaries are stocked with trout in spring. Anglers need a valid West Virginia fishing license and trout stamp. Pull-offs along the park road provide easy access for campers.
The park nature center offers exhibits on local wildlife, geology, and Appalachian forest ecology. Seasonal ranger programs and guided hikes run during summer weekends. The center is steps from the main campground.
Longer backcountry loops link the park's more than 40 miles of hiking trails through high ridges and stream valleys. These routes are best for experienced hikers and offer a quieter alternative to the waterfall trails. Trailheads start near the central campground area.

Holly River State Park, WV, United States
The park sits along WV Route 20 near Hacker Valley, roughly a one-hour drive (about 50 miles) south of Buckhannon and about 90 minutes (around 70 miles) northeast of Charleston via I-79 and WV 15. The final approach follows narrow, winding two-lane mountain roads with steep grades, tight curves, and limited shoulders, so long Class A motorhomes and large fifth wheels should drive slowly and use engine braking on descents. There are no major tunnels on the route, but cell service drops in the valleys, so drivers should download maps in advance. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Yeager International (CRW) in Charleston, with Pittsburgh (PIT) a longer alternative to the north.
