Late spring through early fall, roughly May to October, offers the most comfortable weather and full access to the campground, boat ramp, and river activities. Summer brings warm days ideal for picnicking and fishing, though July and August can be humid. September and October are strong shoulder-season choices for RV travel, with cooler nights, fall color along the Illinois River, and lighter campground use. Winter visits are possible for day use, but camping amenities are typically limited.

Anglers can access the Illinois River directly from the park's boat ramp and shoreline. Common catches include catfish, walleye, white bass, and crappie, especially near the Marseilles Lock and Dam tailwaters.
The park offers scenic overlooks of the Marseilles Lock and Dam, where visitors can watch river barges pass through. Interpretive signs explain the role of the Illinois Waterway in regional commerce.
Picnickers can use historic stone-and-timber shelters built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Multiple shaded picnic areas offer tables and grills within walking distance of RV parking.
Illini State Park has several short wooded trails that wind along the river bluff and through mature oak-hickory forest. Trails are generally flat to gently rolling and suitable for casual hikers.
The park includes playgrounds, open lawns, and horseshoe pits that are popular for family gatherings. Group shelters can be reserved in advance for larger outings.
The riverside habitat attracts bald eagles in winter, along with herons, waterfowl, and migrating songbirds in spring and fall. Quiet mornings near the river offer the best viewing opportunities.
Starved Rock State Park is about a 25 mile drive west and offers sandstone canyons, waterfalls, and longer hiking trails. It makes an easy day trip for RVers basing at Illini State Park.

Illini State Park, IL, United States
The park is just south of Marseilles, about 75 miles southwest of Chicago (roughly a 1.5 hour drive) via I-80 and Illinois Route 23 or US Route 6. Ottawa is about 10 miles west, and Joliet is around 40 miles east. RV drivers should note that final approach roads near the river are narrow two-lane routes with a few tight turns and a rail crossing, so large rigs should take the approach slowly. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Chicago Midway (MDW), about 75 miles northeast, with O'Hare (ORD) a similar distance.
