Late May through early September is the prime window, when the campground is fully open, the beach is staffed, and warm weather favors boating, swimming, and fishing. July and August bring the biggest crowds and boat traffic, so late May, June, and September offer milder temperatures and easier reservations. Spring and fall are excellent for saugeye fishing and quieter paddling, though water temperatures cool quickly after October. Winter visits focus on day use and ice fishing when conditions allow, with campground services reduced.

Indian Lake is one of Ohio's most popular unlimited-horsepower boating lakes, with multiple public launch ramps around the shoreline. Power boating, water skiing, sailing, and personal watercraft are all common. Several ramps have adjacent trailer and RV parking.
Indian Lake is best known for saugeye, a hybrid stocked by ODNR, along with largemouth bass, crappie, channel catfish, and bluegill. Shore fishing is possible from causeways and piers, and boat anglers work the islands and channels. Ohio fishing licenses are required.
The state park operates a designated swimming beach on the lake, with a sandy shoreline, picnic tables, and nearby restrooms. It is typically open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Parking is large-vehicle friendly on the day-use side.
A paved multi-use path connects the park with the village of Lakeview and surrounding neighborhoods. The flat trail is suitable for casual riders and families and provides a car-free way to reach shops, ice cream stands, and the marina district. Trailhead parking accommodates vehicles with trailers.
Several day-use areas around the lake offer picnic tables, shelters, and lake views. Moundwood and Old Field are popular with families, with shaded lawns and nearby boat access. Shelters can be reserved in advance through ODNR.
The marshes and islands on the upper lake are important habitat for waterfowl, herons, bald eagles, and migrating songbirds. Spring and fall migration bring the greatest variety of species. Binoculars and a small kayak or canoe are the best way to explore quieter coves.
Kayakers and canoeists can launch from several quieter ramps and explore shallow bays, marsh edges, and tree-lined channels that larger powerboats avoid. Morning and evening provide the calmest water. Life jackets and a navigation plan are recommended on this large, busy lake.
