Mid-July through August offers the warmest weather, fully operational ferry schedules, and the best conditions for hiking and paddling the island. June is quieter but bug pressure is high, as mosquitos and black flies peak in June or July and can continue into August. Early September is an excellent shoulder window for RVers, with cooler nights, fewer crowds, and ferries still running before the park closes for winter. May and October are transitional with limited ferry service and unpredictable Lake Superior weather.

Rock Harbor is the main visitor hub on the northeast end of the island, with short trails to Scoville Point, Suzy's Cave, and Lookout Louise. Day hikers arriving on the Ranger III or Isle Royale Queen IV can explore multiple loops within a few miles of the dock. nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/camping.htm
The Greenstone Ridge Trail is the island's signature long-distance hike, running about 40 miles along the spine of Isle Royale from Windigo to Rock Harbor. Most backpackers complete it in four to five days, using ferries to shuttle one-way between trailheads.
Isle Royale's inland lakes and sheltered coves are a premier canoe and kayak destination. Paddlers can bring a vessel on a ferry to an island transportation hub like Rock Harbor or Windigo and utilize the Voyageur II to enter the island's interior. nps.gov/tripideas/paddle-and-portage-interior-lakes-at-isle-royale.htm
Windigo anchors the southwest end of the island and serves paddlers and hikers arriving from Grand Portage, Minnesota. The Voyageur II is a 65 foot twin engine diesel vessel that provides mail and passenger service, operating between Grand Portage, Minnesota and numerous drop-off and pick-up locations along the north and south shores of the island. nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/voyageur-ii.htm
Isle Royale preserves ten major shipwrecks in the cold, clear waters surrounding the island, making it one of the top freshwater dive destinations in North America. Dives require advanced certification, permits, and charter service from mainland operators.
Anglers can target lake trout and coaster brook trout in Lake Superior and northern pike, walleye, and perch in interior lakes. A State of Michigan fishing license is required to fish Lake Superior; a license is not needed for interior lakes and streams. nps.gov/tripideas/paddle-and-portage-interior-lakes-at-isle-royale.htm
Isle Royale is famous for its long-running moose and wolf predator-prey study, and moose sightings are common along pond edges and quiet trail sections. Beaver, red fox, loons, and snowshoe hare are also frequently observed across the island.
A short boat ride from Rock Harbor, visitors can tour the restored Rock Harbor Lighthouse and the historic Edisen Fishery, which interprets the island's commercial fishing heritage. Ranger-led boat tours connect the two sites during the summer season.

Isle Royale National Park, MI, United States
RV travelers stage at one of three mainland ports: Houghton, Michigan (the park headquarters), Copper Harbor, Michigan, or Grand Portage, Minnesota, then ride a passenger ferry or seaplane across Lake Superior. Houghton is roughly a 9 to 10 hour drive from Detroit and about 7 hours from Minneapolis, while Grand Portage sits near the Canadian border about 4.5 hours northeast of Duluth. The Isle Royale Queen IV passenger ferry operates between Copper Harbor, Michigan and Rock Harbor on the northeast end of Isle Royale National Park, and there is no car ferry service. RVs must be parked at the mainland port for the duration of the visit; the nearest commercial airports for fly-and-rent trips are Houghton County Memorial (CMX) and Duluth International (DLH).
