Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, CA, United States
Jedediah Smith Redwoods is located 9 miles east of Crescent City, California via US Highway 199, a scenic but winding mountain route that can experience winter rain, wind, and occasional mudslides. Crescent City Airport (60 miles south near Eureka) is the nearest regional airport for fly-and-rent options. RV drivers should note that narrow lanes and tight curves in the park restrict motorhomes to 25 feet maximum length and trailers to 21 feet. Howland Hill Road, a historic dirt road through the park, is not suitable for trailers or larger RVs.
June through September offers the best conditions for RV travel, with cool, dry weather and clear skies ideal for hiking and river activities. Late April through May is an excellent shoulder season with manageable crowds and blooming rhododendrons, though trails may be soft and muddy. October sees declining precipitation but increasing cloud cover. Winter months (December through March) bring heavy rainfall, frequent storms, and wet conditions, though the park remains open with fewer visitors and mild temperatures rarely dropping below 40°F.

A 5.5-mile round-trip hike through old-growth redwoods and fern-lined riparian forest to Fern Falls and the iconic double-trunk Boy Scout Tree. This trail, built in the 1930s, is the only route into the heart of the park and offers immersive redwood forest experience. Trail is closed seasonally from November 1 through May 1 for resource protection. nps.gov/places/boyscouttrail.htm
A historic 10-mile dirt road built in 1850 that winds through some of the park's most impressive old-growth redwoods, offering a scenic alternative to trails. The narrow, winding road is unsuitable for trailers and RVs over 25 feet, but passenger vehicles can navigate the route for close-up views of giant trees and forest immersion. parks.ca.gov/?page_id=413
The Smith River, California's longest major free-flowing river, offers ranger-led kayak tours during summer months covering 3 miles through Class I-II whitewater. The river also provides opportunities for snorkeling in clear, deep pools to observe steelhead, salmon, and cutthroat trout, plus shoreline and boat fishing for winter steelhead runs (October-February) and summer trout. redwoodparksconservancy.org/ranger-led-kayak-tours/
The park offers over 20 miles of maintained trails through diverse old-growth redwood groves, fern understory, and riparian ecosystems. Trails range from short walks near the campground to full-day backpacking routes, providing flexible options for RV campers of varying fitness levels.
Seasonally, the park offers guided nature talks, interpretive programs, and campfire gatherings at Jedediah Smith Campground. These programs provide expert insight into redwood ecology, park history, and wildlife observation, enriching the RV camping experience. nps.gov/redw/planyourvisit/kayaktours.htm
Designated trails within the park accommodate bicycling and horseback riding for visitors seeking alternative ways to explore the redwood forest and riparian areas. Trails are well-maintained and pass through diverse landscapes accessible from the main campground. parks.ca.gov/?page_id=413
We rented the Yankee Clipper for 6 nights and had an amazing camping trip. Two adults and two teenagers fit comfortably. We really appreciated the host leaving essentials like coffee, condiments, utensils, toilet paper and linens. Host was quick to communicate and made the experience easy and efficient. Thank you!!
