Best time to visit John Bryan State Park

Late spring through early fall, roughly May through October, is the best window for RV travel, with warm weather, full campground operations, and lush conditions in the gorge. Fall (late September into October) brings peak color in the hardwood forest and cooler nights that are ideal for hiking. Summer weekends fill quickly, so midweek stays are easier to book. Winter is quiet and much of the trail system remains open, but services are reduced and cold snaps can bring snow and ice.

  • Rock climbing and rappelling Strenuous
    RV parking available

John Bryan is one of the few Ohio state parks with a designated rock climbing and rappelling area on the dolomite cliffs above the river. A permit is required and climbers must register at the park office before using the walls.

  • Mountain biking on the Pine Tree Trail Moderate

The park offers a dedicated mountain bike trail through rolling upland forest on the plateau above the gorge. The singletrack is best suited to intermediate riders and stays dry enough for most of the riding season.

  • Explore Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve Easy

Clifton Gorge adjoins John Bryan to the east and protects the narrowest, most dramatic section of the Little Miami River canyon. A well-marked trail leads from the park boundary past waterfalls, potholes, and interpretive signs on the area's geology and Underground Railroad history.

  • Picnicking at the Day Lodge Easy
    RV parking available

The park's historic day lodge and surrounding picnic shelters sit on the plateau near the campground with large parking areas that accommodate RVs and tow vehicles. Grills, tables, and open lawns make it a convenient base for family gatherings.

  • Fishing the Little Miami River Easy
    RV parking available

The Little Miami is a state and national scenic river known for smallmouth bass, rock bass, and sunfish. Anglers can access the water from several points along the trail system inside the park with a valid Ohio fishing license.

The village of Yellow Springs is about 10 minutes from the park and offers independent shops, cafes, and the John Bryan Community Pottery. It also serves as the southern gateway to the paved Little Miami Scenic Trail for cyclists.

How to get to John Bryan State Park

The park sits between Yellow Springs and Clifton in Greene County, about 20 minutes east of Dayton and roughly 1 hour 15 minutes northeast of Cincinnati via I-70 and US-68. Columbus is about 1 hour 20 minutes to the northeast via I-70 and SR-72. Roads into the park are paved two-lane highways with some tight curves and a steep, winding entrance road down into the gorge, so larger rigs should use low gear and watch for low-hanging branches. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Dayton International Airport (DAY), with Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International (CVG) and John Glenn Columbus International (CMH) as larger alternatives.
