Late April through early June and September through October are the most comfortable months for RV travel, with mild daytime temperatures and lower humidity. Midsummer brings hot, dry days and occasional afternoon thunderstorms, but it is also prime time for swimming and boating on the reservoir. Winter is quiet and cold but rewarding for birders hoping to see wintering bald eagles. Spring winds can be strong on the open plains, so RVers should secure awnings and loose gear.

Anglers fish both John Martin Reservoir and the smaller tailwater Lake Hasty for warm-water species such as walleye, bass, crappie, catfish, and saugeye. Shoreline access and boat ramps are available, and Lake Hasty is a more protected option for small boats and kids.
John Martin Reservoir is one of the largest lakes in southeastern Colorado and supports motorboating, sailing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Boat ramps are located on the north shore, with ample trailer parking suitable for RV tow vehicles.
The park is a notable stop along the Central Flyway and hosts more than 400 recorded bird species. Winter brings concentrations of bald eagles, while spring and fall feature migrating shorebirds, pelicans, and waterfowl.
Red Shin Trail is a multi-mile loop that climbs a low bluff for sweeping views of the reservoir and the surrounding shortgrass prairie. It is suitable for casual hikers and offers interpretive signage about the area's ecology and Santa Fe Trail history.
Lake Hasty has a designated swim beach with sandy shoreline, picnic areas, and shade trees just a short walk from the main campground. It is a popular family spot during summer and sits close to RV sites.
The park lies along the Santa Fe National Historic Trail, and interpretive exhibits and wayside panels describe the route's role in 19th-century commerce between Missouri and New Mexico. Self-guided stops near the visitor area are accessible to RV travelers with standard parking.
Paved and gravel park roads, plus multi-use paths between Lake Hasty and the reservoir, offer relaxed cycling on gentle terrain. The flat landscape makes it accessible for casual riders and families staying at the campground.

John Martin Reservoir State Park, CO, United States
The park entrance is near Hasty, Colorado, just off U.S. Highway 50 in Bent County. La Junta is roughly 30 miles west, Lamar about 30 miles east, and Pueblo approximately 110 miles west, a drive of about two hours on mostly flat, straight prairie highway. Because the route is plains driving rather than mountain passes, there are no tunnels, steep grades, or RV weight restrictions of concern, though strong crosswinds are common. The nearest airport with major service is Colorado Springs, about 170 miles northwest, making it a reasonable fly-and-rent option.
