Late spring through early fall, roughly May through September, is the prime window, with warm, dry weather and full reservoir levels ideal for boating and swimming. July and August bring peak temperatures and the busiest campground nights, so reservations should be booked well ahead. Shoulder months of May, June, and September offer cooler mornings, smaller crowds, and good fishing conditions, though reservoir drawdown in fall can affect boat ramp use.

Lost Creek Lake is the centerpiece of Joseph H. Stewart State Recreation Area, with a marina and paved boat ramp inside the park. The reservoir supports motorboats, kayaks, paddleboards, and fishing craft across its long, multi-armed shoreline. Ramp conditions depend on seasonal reservoir levels.
Lost Creek Lake is stocked with rainbow trout and also holds smallmouth bass, landlocked chinook, and panfish. Anglers can fish from shore, boat, or the park's fishing dock near the day-use area. An Oregon fishing license is required.
A paved multi-use trail circles portions of Lost Creek Lake, with access points inside Joseph H. Stewart State Recreation Area. The route is popular for walking, jogging, and cycling and offers lake and river views. Portions of the Rogue River Trail pass through Four Corners Campground and Fire Glen Campground on the far shore.
The park's day-use area has a designated swim zone, grassy lawns, picnic tables, and shelters overlooking the reservoir. It is a popular summer stop for families traveling between Medford and Crater Lake. Shade is limited at midday, so arrive early in peak season.
The shoreline and surrounding oak and pine woodlands support osprey, bald eagles, deer, and a variety of waterfowl. Early morning and dusk are the best viewing windows from the trail and day-use shoreline. Bring binoculars and stay on marked paths.
Crater Lake National Park's south entrance is roughly an hour and a half northeast of the park via Highway 62, making Joseph H. Stewart a practical RV basecamp. Rim Drive, Crater Lake Lodge, and the Rim Village viewpoints are the main draws. Rim Drive is typically only fully open from mid-summer into fall due to snow.
The paved lakeside trail and quiet campground loops inside Joseph H. Stewart State Recreation Area are well suited to casual cyclists and families. More experienced riders can connect to longer sections of the Rogue River Trail around the reservoir. Helmets are required for minors in Oregon.
Nick was amazing. Super friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. Great orientation to where everything was and how to use it all. We were 4 adults and a dog and managed to make it work. I was worried about the bunks but I actually really liked them. They were comfortable and big enough that I didn’t feel like I was in a coffin. RV was stocked with all the kitchen stuff we would need including cleaning supplies. Heat worked really well.

Joseph H. Stewart State Recreation Area, OR, United States
The park sits along Oregon Highway 62 about 35 miles northeast of Medford, roughly a 45-minute drive, and about 50 miles southwest of Crater Lake National Park's south entrance. Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport (MFR) is the nearest airport for fly-and-rent travelers. Highway 62 is a generally RV-friendly two-lane route, but drivers should watch for winding sections, logging trucks, and steeper grades as the road climbs toward the Cascades above the lake. From Interstate 5, exit at Medford and follow Crater Lake Highway (OR-62) northeast to the park entrance.
