Late May through early October is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with warm days ideal for paddling, fishing, and trail use. September and early October offer cooler nights, thinner crowds, and fall color along Rock Creek Canyon. Spring shoulder season can bring muddy trails and periodic high water on the Kankakee River, including documented ice-jam flooding in January. Midsummer weekends fill quickly, so weekday arrivals are easier for larger rigs.

The Rock Creek Canyon Trail follows a limestone gorge to a seasonal waterfall and scenic footbridge. The route passes through mature oak and hickory forest on easy, mostly level tread, making it the signature hike of the park.
Paddle a segment of the Kankakee River, recognized as a National Water Trail. Calm current and multiple access points make it suitable for canoes, kayaks, and tubers of most skill levels. nps.gov/WaterTrails/Trail/Info/56
A paved multi-use trail runs along the north side of the river for several miles. Cyclists can ride from the park office to Warner Bridge with interpretive stops along the way.
Fishing the Kankakee River is a top draw, with smallmouth bass, walleye, catfish, and panfish commonly caught from shore or boat. Several developed access points within the park include parking for tow vehicles and boat trailers.
The park maintains dedicated equestrian trails on the south side of the river. A horse camp and concession-operated stables offer guided rides for non-owners.
Chippewa Campground is the park's main vehicle campground and offers Class A electric sites plus more primitive loops. Amenities include a dump station, showers, and quick access to the river and trail system.
The Potawatomi area offers picnic shelters, a playground, and river access within walking distance of the main trailheads. It is a convenient base for day trips when the main campground is full.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip, Patrick and Mike were excellent to deal with, the RV was in excellent shape, they explained all the functionality and provided YouTube videos we could reference if needed which helped. Communications were also excellent, we had a couple questions and they responded immediately. Based on our experience, we would definitely rent again and highly recommend this RV.

Amazing Experience. First time renting an RV. The RV was just as described and operated beautifully, there was never any issue with any equipment on the RV, Plenty of space and the bed was very comfortable. The hosts were very nice, accommodating and easy to communicate with if needed. Would definitely recommend and would rent from again.

Kankakee River State Park, IL, United States
The park sits roughly 8 miles northwest of the city of Kankakee and about 60 miles south of downtown Chicago, a drive of about an hour and fifteen minutes via I-57 and IL-102. Joliet is about 30 miles north, and Bloomington is about 90 miles southwest. Access is via flat paved county and state highways with no mountain grades or major tunnels, so most Class A, Class C, and travel-trailer rigs can reach the park without issue. The closest major fly-and-rent airport is Chicago Midway (MDW), with O'Hare (ORD) as an alternative.
