Late spring through early fall is the prime window for RV travel at Kentucky-Alleyne. The scenery is spectacular from early April to late October, with spring's palette of soft pastels slowly changing to the vibrant golds of autumn. July and August bring the warmest, driest weather and the best swimming and paddling conditions, but also the biggest weekend crowds from the Lower Mainland and Okanagan. Shoulder months like May, June, and September offer cooler nights, quieter campsites, and strong trout fishing.

Both lakes offer classic BC interior stillwater trout fishing from shore, canoe, or small boat. The lakes and ponds are stocked with rainbow trout. Anyone fishing or angling in British Columbia must have an appropriate licence. bcparks.ca/kentucky-alleyne-park/
Canoes, kayaks, and small fishing boats are ideal for exploring the turquoise kettle lakes. The small gravel boat launch on Kentucky Lake is accessed by a single lane gravel road past site 4, with a small wooden dock and a turn-around area, and another small gravel boat launch sits on Alleyne Lake between sites 53 and 54, best suited to small, light boats. bcparks.ca/explore/parkpgs/kentucky_alleyne/index.html
The grassland and wetland mosaic supports abundant wildlife viewing right from camp. The lakes and ponds draw waterfowl such as goldeneye, mallards, teal, and grebe, while hawks and falcons hunt the grasslands, and the blue-listed sharptail grouse, jack rabbits and ground squirrels shelter in stands of aspen and scrub juniper. bcparks.ca/kentucky-alleyne-park/
The western toad, a species listed as Special Concern in Canada and on Schedule 1 of the federal Species at Risk Act, resides in the park, and the communal breeding site in the West Pond between Kentucky Lake and Alleyne Lake is the starting point of the annual migration for tens of thousands of juvenile toads. Visitors should respect temporary trail closures and occasional campsite closures around sites 1 to 3 during the roughly two-week event. bcparks.ca/explore/parkpgs/kentucky_alleyne/index.html
Cold, clean water offers a refreshing summer dip, though conditions are rustic. The turquoise water is cold and there are no buoys to designate a swimming area, there are no beaches and most of the lakeshore by the campgrounds is natural marsh with rushes, and there are no lifeguards on duty at provincial parks. bcparks.ca/explore/parkpgs/kentucky_alleyne/index.html
When lakes freeze safely, the park offers a quiet backcountry-style outing. Depending on temperatures, there are ice fishing opportunities in the park, and access may be difficult depending on road conditions. bcparks.ca/explore/parkpgs/kentucky_alleyne/index.html
Informal trails and park roads give easy walking through open country rich in geological features. Several kettle lakes, eskers, and fluvial outwash deposits are evidence of the glacial activity that formed the landscape, with large, mature Douglas fir and Ponderosa pine surrounding the lakes. bcparks.ca/explore/parkpgs/kentucky_alleyne/index.html
Julie and Keith were amazing at communicating even when I ran into a problem late at night. They were super helpful. Everything worked amazing on the trailer and there was an amazing amount of water for the four days we had it.

Owners were very nice and accommodating. Everything worked without a hitch other than some small things that were negligible. Would definitely rent again!!!

This was an enjoyable RV to drive and to stay in. It is advertised as a 2014 but is a 1998. The host left extra towels in the RV which wasn't part of the reservation and I really appreciated that. There was coffee, tea and sugar in the RV as well which was a nice touch. It was very clean.

Kentucky-Alleyne Provincial Park, BC, Canada
The park is located 38 km south of Merritt or 11 km south of Aspen Grove, just off Hwy 5A. It sits in BC's Nicola Valley, about a 90-minute drive from Kelowna and roughly 3.5 hours from Vancouver via the Coquihalla. The Coquihalla Highway and the Highway 97C Connector have made access easier to these fishing lakes. RVers should plan for long mountain grades on the Coquihalla (Hwy 5), including the Coquihalla Summit at around 1,244 m, where cold weather and snow can linger into late spring. The final access road into the park is gravel and narrow in spots, so large rigs should drive slowly. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Kelowna International Airport (YLW).
