Best time to visit Kettle Stones Provincial Park

Late June through early September offers the most reliable access, with dry ground, long daylight, and mild temperatures ideal for the rough drive in and short hike to the stones. July and August are warmest but can bring biting insects, so bug protection is essential. Shoulder months such as May and September can be pleasant but access roads may be muddy after rain or snowmelt. Winter travel is not recommended for RVers as roads are unplowed and the park is effectively inaccessible.

Things to do at Kettle Stones Provincial Park

  • View the Kettle Stones Easy

The main attraction is the cluster of massive sandstone concretions that give the park its name. These unusual rounded boulders were left behind by retreating glaciers and stand out dramatically against the surrounding prairie and aspen forest.

  • Backcountry Hiking Moderate

Informal trails lead from the parking area through mixed aspen woodland to the stones and surrounding meadows. Footing can be uneven and trails are unmarked, so sturdy footwear and a GPS or offline map are recommended.

  • Wildlife Viewing Easy

The park and surrounding parkland habitat support deer, moose, black bear, and a variety of songbirds and raptors. Early morning and evening visits offer the best chance of sightings in the quiet, low-traffic setting.

  • Nature Photography Easy

The geological formations, wildflowers, and open parkland scenery make for striking photo subjects. The lack of development and crowds means uninterrupted landscape compositions in all directions.

  • Stargazing Easy

With no nearby towns or light pollution, clear nights at Kettle Stones offer excellent views of the Milky Way and occasional northern lights. Bring warm layers as prairie nights cool quickly even in summer.

  • Day Trip from Riding Mountain National Park Easy
    RV parking available

Many RV travellers combine a visit to Kettle Stones with a stay at Riding Mountain National Park to the southeast. Riding Mountain offers full-service campgrounds, hiking, and wildlife viewing that complement a short excursion to the Kettle Stones site.

How to get to Kettle Stones Provincial Park

The park lies off rural roads northeast of Grandview, Manitoba, roughly a 40 minute drive from Grandview and about 1 hour 15 minutes from Dauphin. From Winnipeg it is approximately a 4 to 4.5 hour drive of around 350 km via the Yellowhead Highway (Hwy 16). RV drivers should note that the final approach uses narrow, unpaved municipal roads that can be rutted, soft when wet, and unsuitable for large Class A motorhomes or long fifth wheels, so many travellers park an RV at a nearby campground and drive in with a smaller vehicle. The closest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Winnipeg Richardson International Airport (YWG).
