Early fall is a strong shoulder season for RV travelers, with cooler nights, fewer bugs, and peak foliage along the Housatonic in late September and October. • Pomperaug Trail Moderate

The Pomperaug Trail is a blue-blazed Connecticut Forest and Park Association route that passes through Kettletown, climbing ridges above Lake Zoar. Hikers gain filtered water views and see mountain laurel thickets that bloom in June.

Kettletown's day-use area has picnic tables, grills, and shaded groves near the lake. Several large pull-through lots make it workable for RV day visitors even when the campground is full.

  • Birdwatching and nature study Easy
    RV parking available

The park's mix of hardwood forest, lakeshore, and rocky outcrops supports a variety of songbirds, raptors, and waterfowl. Spring and fall migration are the most productive times along the ridge trails.

  • Paddling on Lake Zoar Moderate
    RV parking available

Lake Zoar is a favored paddling destination on the Housatonic, with quiet coves and forested shorelines. Kayaks and canoes can be carried down to the water from the park, while trailered boats generally launch at nearby state-managed ramps.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

How to get to Kettletown State Park

The park sits off Exit 15 of Interstate 84 in Southbury, roughly a 25 to 30 minute drive from Waterbury, about 1 hour 30 minutes from Hartford, and around 1 hour 45 minutes from New York City in normal traffic. RV drivers should note that the final approach follows narrow, winding town roads with hills and sharp curves down toward Lake Zoar, so larger rigs should take turns slowly and watch for low-hanging branches. There are no tunnels or major mountain passes on the route, but I-84 has sustained grades through the Litchfield Hills. The closest major airports for fly-and-rent trips are Bradley International (BDL) near Hartford and Westchester County Airport (HPN) in New York.
