Keystone State Park, PA, United States

How to get to Keystone State Park

The park is reached via U.S. Route 22 and Pennsylvania Route 981, roughly 35 miles (about a 50 minute drive) east of Pittsburgh and 60 miles west of Johnstown. Access roads are two-lane rural routes with rolling grades typical of the Allegheny foothills, so RV drivers should watch for tight curves, low-clearance rail bridges in nearby towns, and narrow shoulders rather than major mountain passes. Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers, about 60 miles west of the park. GPS routing occasionally directs larger rigs onto secondary roads, so following the DCNR-posted directions from Route 22 is recommended.

Best time to visit Keystone State Park

Late May through early October is generally the best window for RV travel, when the campground is in full operation and the lake beach, boat rentals, and concessions are open. June and September offer the best balance of warm days, cool nights, and smaller crowds than the July to August peak. Fall brings strong foliage color through the Laurel Highlands region and is excellent for hiking, though overnight temperatures drop quickly. Winter visits are possible for day use, but campground services and water are typically shut down after the main season.

Things to do at Keystone State Park

  • Keystone Lake Easy
    RV parking available

Keystone Lake is the 78-acre centerpiece of the park, open to boating, paddling, and fishing. The lake has a public boat launch and seasonal rental concession, and a horsepower limit keeps the water calm for kayaks and canoes. Common catches include largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and stocked trout.

  • Swimming Beach Easy
    RV parking available

A designated sand beach on Keystone Lake is open daily from late May through mid-September. Lifeguards may be on duty during posted hours, and changing facilities are available nearby. It is an easy walk or short drive from the campground loops.

  • Lakeside Trail Easy
    RV parking available

The Lakeside Trail loops around much of Keystone Lake and is the park's most popular walking route. The path is mostly level with some gentle grades and crosses mixed hardwood forest and lake overlooks. Trailhead parking near the beach and day-use areas accommodates larger vehicles.

  • Stone Lodge Trail Moderate

Stone Lodge Trail winds through upland forest on the north side of the park, offering a quieter alternative to the lakeshore. The grade is gentle to moderate with a few short climbs. It is a good option for a morning hike from the campground.

  • Fishing and Ice Fishing Easy
    RV parking available

Keystone Lake is stocked by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and offers year-round angling under state regulations. Shoreline access is available from multiple day-use areas and the boat launch. A valid Pennsylvania fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. fishandboat.com/

  • Picnicking and Day-Use Pavilions Easy
    RV parking available

Several picnic pavilions and open picnic areas are spread around the lake, some reservable in advance. Each area includes tables, grills, and nearby restrooms. Parking lots can fit RVs and tow vehicles at most main pavilions.

  • Wildlife Viewing and Birdwatching Easy
    RV parking available

The mix of forest, lake, and former reclaimed mining land attracts herons, waterfowl, songbirds, and white-tailed deer. Early morning walks along the lake and quieter trails offer the best sightings. Binoculars are recommended during spring and fall migration.
