Best time to visit Knight Island State Park

Late June through August offers the warmest lake temperatures, calmest paddling conditions, and the park's full operating season. Early September brings quieter campsites, cooler nights, and good wildlife viewing before the park closes for the season. Spring visits can be limited by cold water, wind, and late ice on the Inland Sea, so shoulder-season RV travelers should plan for mainland basecamping and watch marine forecasts before crossing.

Things to do at Knight Island State Park

  • Perimeter Hiking Trail Easy

A roughly 3-mile loop trail circles the island and connects the remote tent sites with quiet lakeside viewpoints. The route is mostly easy with some rooty sections and offers views of the Inland Sea and neighboring Burton Island.

  • Sea Kayaking and Canoeing Moderate
    RV parking available

Paddling is the primary way to reach and explore Knight Island, with launches on North Hero and Grand Isle providing the shortest crossings. Calm morning conditions are best, as afternoon winds on the Inland Sea can build quickly.

  • Primitive Tent Camping Moderate

The island offers remote, walk-in tent sites spaced around the shoreline for privacy. Sites have no hookups, electricity, or potable water, so campers must pack in everything including drinking water.

  • Swimming and Shoreline Exploration Easy

Small rocky coves and pockets of sandy beach make for refreshing swims on warm summer days. Water clarity is generally good, and the lack of crowds means visitors often have a cove to themselves.

  • Wildlife and Bird Watching Easy

The island supports herons, osprey, waterfowl, and songbirds, with frequent sightings from the perimeter trail and shoreline. Early morning and evening offer the best viewing.

  • Day Trip from Burton Island Moderate
    RV parking available

Neighboring Burton Island State Park serves as a popular jumping-off point for Knight Island visits via short paddles. Burton Island is reached by a passenger ferry from Kamp Kill Kare State Park, where RV travelers can park their tow vehicle for the day.

  • Stargazing Easy

Knight Island's location in the middle of Lake Champlain and its lack of electric lighting create dark-sky conditions ideal for astronomy. Clear summer nights showcase the Milky Way over the water.

We had a great holiday aboard Le Nomade! Perfect condition, comfortable, drives really well. Cleanliness and communication were impeccable. Sébastien was super quick to respond to the couple of questions we had along the way, and very helpful. The back hitch was a real bonus, as it allowed us to attach a bike rack and open up those possibilities. We have AirBnB-ed travel in recent years and the experience was on par with our best Superhost interactions! Highly recommend this vehicle, and the RVezy process is very straightforward.

How to get to Knight Island State Park

The nearest launch points are on North Hero and Grand Isle, roughly a 45 to 60 minute drive north of Burlington on US Route 2. Boston is about four hours southeast and Montreal is about 90 minutes north via I-89. There is no bridge, ferry, or vehicle access to the island itself, so RVs must be parked at a mainland state park or public boat launch while visitors paddle or boat across. Burlington International Airport is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent trips, and RV drivers should note the Lake Champlain Bridge and several narrow causeway sections on Route 2 that can be tight in wind.
