Kohler-Andrae State Park, WI, United States
The park sits just off Interstate 43 about 5 miles south of downtown Sheboygan, roughly an hour north of Milwaukee (about 60 miles) and around 2.5 hours from Chicago (about 145 miles). RV access is straightforward via I-43 to County Highway V, then onto Old Park Road; roads are paved and free of low tunnels or steep grades, making the park suitable for large motorhomes and travel trailers. Watch for tight turns at the campground entry stations and reduced clearance under tree canopy on interior loops. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Milwaukee Mitchell International (MKE), about 70 miles south.
Late June through August offers the warmest weather, fully open campgrounds, swimmable Lake Michigan water, and active interpretive programming at the Sanderling Nature Center. September and early October are excellent shoulder months for RV travelers, with fewer crowds, cooler nights ideal for campfires, and fall color in the hardwoods. May and early June can be cool and breezy off the lake but offer easier reservations and active spring birding along the Black River. Winter visits are possible for day use, but campground services are limited and lake-effect snow is common.

The Cordwalk is an elevated wooden boardwalk that crosses Kohler-Andrae's rare freshwater dune ecosystem between the campground area and the Lake Michigan beach. The route is short, mostly level, and protects fragile dune grasses while giving easy access to the shoreline. Trailhead parking near the Sanderling Nature Center has space large enough for most RV tow vehicles.
The park's wide sand beach stretches for roughly two miles along Lake Michigan and is the centerpiece for swimming, sunbathing, and sunrise viewing. Parking lots near the picnic area accommodate larger vehicles, and beach access points are connected by paved walkways and the Cordwalk. Lake water is coldest in spring and warmest in late summer.
This interpretive loop combines forested footpath with sections of boardwalk and identifies plants of the dune, swale, and pine forest communities. The route is short and gentle, making it suitable for most ability levels. Interpretive signs are tied to programming at the nearby Sanderling Nature Center.
The Sanderling Nature Center is the park's interpretive hub, with exhibits on Lake Michigan dunes, local wildlife, and Black River wetlands. Naturalist programs run during the warm season and are family friendly. The adjacent parking lot is paved and easy to navigate with a tow vehicle or smaller RV.
The Black River winds through the park's wetlands before meeting Lake Michigan and is a popular spot for kayaking, canoeing, and shoreline fishing. A small launch and parking area provide access for hand-carry boats. Wildlife viewing along the marsh is best in early morning.
This trail loops through stabilized older dunes covered in pine and hardwood forest behind the active beach dunes. Footing is mostly soft sand and pine duff, with gentle elevation changes. It is a quieter alternative when the beach is busy on summer weekends.
Paved interior roads make for relaxed cycling within the park, and riders can connect to regional routes including the nearby Old Plank Road Trail corridor running west toward Greenbush. Bring a road or hybrid bike for paved riding. Day-use parking lots are large enough for vehicles with bike racks.
