Late May through early October is the prime window, when the campground is open, daytime highs are comfortable, and mountain evenings stay cool enough for campfires. July and August are peak for swimming and lake use, while late September and early October bring strong fall color across Laurel Ridge with fewer crowds. Shoulder seasons can be wet and chilly at elevation, so RVers should pack for cold nights even in spring. Winter visits are scenic but most campground services are closed.

Kooser Lake is a small impoundment in the center of the park stocked with trout and open to non-powered and electric-motor boats. Shore access is easy from the day-use area parking, and the lake is a good option for families with kayaks or canoes hauled on an RV.
The park's short interpretive loop follows Kooser Run through hemlock and hardwood forest. It is a quick leg-stretcher that starts near the day-use lot and suits campers looking for a low-effort walk from their site.
A designated swimming area on Kooser Lake operates during the summer season with sand beach access. It is a convenient cooldown close to the campground loop.
Kooser borders Forbes State Forest, which offers a large network of hiking, mountain biking, and backcountry trails across Laurel Ridge. Trailhead parking along PA 31 and nearby forest roads can usually accommodate smaller RVs and tow vehicles.
Laurel Hill State Park sits just a few miles east of Kooser and offers a larger lake, beach, and additional trails. It is an easy day-use detour for RVers based at Kooser.
The Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville is about a 40-minute drive from the park. The memorial has large, level visitor parking that accommodates RVs and makes a meaningful half-day trip.
When the campground closes, Kooser remains open for day use and connects to snowmobile routes through Forbes State Forest. Cross-country skiing and sledding are popular when snow cover is sufficient.
Mike was an excellent host and his camper was completely stocked with everything our family could have needed besides our clothes, personal hygiene and food. We will absolutely chose this camper and this host everytime we need to rent one in the future also! He was so easy to communicate with and even delivered the camper early to ensure we got the best camping spot available! Thanks again Mike, we were very impressed!!!

Kooser State Park, PA, United States
The park is on Pennsylvania Route 31 about 10 miles west of Somerset and roughly 65 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, an easy drive of about 1 hour 20 minutes from Pittsburgh International Airport for fly-and-rent trips. From the Pennsylvania Turnpike, use the Somerset exit and head west on PA 31, a two-lane mountain road with sustained grades climbing Laurel Ridge that RV drivers should take slowly. Large rigs should avoid narrow secondary roads through Laurel Summit and stick to PA 31 and US 30. The nearest major airport is Pittsburgh International (PIT).
