Best time to visit La Manche Provincial Park

Late June through August is the most reliable window for RV travel, when campground services are open, coastal fog is less persistent, and daytime highs sit in the mid-teens to low twenties Celsius. Early July onward is also prime time for iceberg and whale sightings along the nearby Irish Loop coast. Shoulder visits in June and September are quieter and cooler, but travellers should expect damp weather, fewer open services in nearby communities, and limited park facilities outside the operating season.

Things to do at La Manche Provincial Park

  • La Manche Village Suspension Bridge Hike Moderate
    RV parking available

A hike along a spur of the East Coast Trail leads to a pedestrian suspension bridge over the narrow La Manche cove at the site of an abandoned fishing village. The trail descends through spruce and fir forest to stone foundations at the shoreline. It is one of the most photographed spots on the Avalon Peninsula.

  • East Coast Trail: Flamber Head Path Strenuous
    RV parking available

The Flamber Head Path is a rugged East Coast Trail section running north from La Manche village toward Brigus South, with dramatic sea cliffs and headland views. It is a long and strenuous day hike best suited to experienced walkers. Trail access is via the park and connecting footpaths.

  • La Manche Pond Paddling and Fishing Easy
    RV parking available

La Manche Pond, adjacent to the campground, is a quiet freshwater pond suitable for canoeing, kayaking, and shoreline fishing. Anglers can try for brook trout under a Newfoundland and Labrador angling licence. Car-top boat access is available near the day-use area.

  • Swimming and Day Use Area Easy
    RV parking available

The park's day-use area offers picnic tables and freshwater swimming access near the pond and river. Facilities include washrooms and shaded picnic spots in the surrounding boreal forest. It is a family-friendly stop for RV travellers touring the Irish Loop.

  • Wildlife and Seabird Viewing Easy
    RV parking available

The park and surrounding coast offer chances to spot moose, red fox, bald eagles, and seabirds such as gulls and guillemots. Early morning along quiet park roads is often the best time for sightings. Bring binoculars for offshore whale and iceberg spotting in early summer.

  • Irish Loop Scenic Drive Easy
    RV parking available

Route 10, the Irish Loop, is a scenic coastal drive linking La Manche with Ferryland, Mistaken Point, and St. Vincent's. Highlights include historic Ferryland lighthouse picnics and beach-based whale watching at St. Vincent's. The full loop makes a long but rewarding RV day trip from the park.

What a pleasure it was to deal with Cynthia. Her RV was everything we needed to tour Newfoundland and made for an amazing experience.

Right from the start when i first reached out Cynthia was quick to reply & a pleasure to deal with. This continued right up to the rental starting & all the way until the final inspection, she was always there when I needed her. There was a delay with the initial delivery by a number or hours as this was her first rental of the season, however she made up for it by allowing us to keep the RV longer on the final day. There was an unexpected issue with the generator, so she reimbursed us for an expense. There was also a problem with a wiper, which i replaced & she reimbursed us as well. It's a cute little RV, a little tight for our liking, but very well decked out. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in NFLD with Cynthia's Winnebago Fuse! Will consider renting again in the warmer season!

How to get to La Manche Provincial Park

From St. John's, the park is roughly 55 km south via Route 10 (the Irish Loop), about a 50 to 60 minute drive on a paved two-lane highway. From Argentia, where the Marine Atlantic ferry arrives from Nova Scotia, it is about 130 km, or around 90 minutes. RV drivers should watch for narrow shoulders, occasional moose on the highway (especially at dawn and dusk), fog on coastal stretches, and a steep, winding access road down into the campground.
