Best time to visit Lake Francis State Park

Late June through August offers the warmest weather, full campground services, and the best lake conditions for swimming, paddling, and boating. Early fall, especially the last two weeks of September, brings peak foliage in the Great North Woods with cooler nights and fewer bugs, ideal for RV travel. Spring and late fall are shoulder seasons with cold nights, possible snow at higher elevations, and limited services, so RVers should confirm campground opening dates before traveling.

Things to do at Lake Francis State Park

  • Fishing on Lake Francis Easy
    RV parking available

Lake Francis is a 2,000-acre reservoir well known in New Hampshire for cold-water fishing for landlocked salmon, lake trout, brook trout, and rainbow trout. Anglers can launch from the park's boat ramp or fish from shore. A New Hampshire fishing license is required.

  • Paddling and Boating Easy
    RV parking available

Kayakers and canoeists can explore quiet coves and forested shorelines on Lake Francis directly from the park's boat launch. Motorboats are permitted, and the lake's size allows for longer day paddles in calm weather.

  • Connecticut Lakes Touring Easy
    RV parking available

U.S. Route 3 north of the park passes First, Second, and Third Connecticut Lakes, ending at the Canadian border. The scenic drive offers pull-offs, picnic areas, and access points to the headwaters of the Connecticut River.

  • Moose Watching Easy
    RV parking available

The Pittsburg area is one of the best places in New Hampshire to spot moose, particularly along Route 3 and surrounding bog roads at dawn and dusk. RVers should drive slowly during low-light hours due to frequent moose crossings.

  • Hiking in the Connecticut Lakes Headwaters Moderate

Trails in the surrounding Connecticut Lakes Headwaters Working Forest and nearby Deer Mountain area lead to ponds, ridges, and viewpoints. Most trailheads have gravel parking suitable for tow vehicles, though large RVs should park at the campground and shuttle.

  • Snowmobile and ATV Trails Moderate
    RV parking available

Pittsburg is a hub for New Hampshire's North Country snowmobile and OHRV trail networks, with hundreds of miles of groomed trails connecting to lodges and lakes. The park area provides parking and staging for trailered machines in season.

  • Swimming and Beach Time Easy
    RV parking available

The park has a sandy day-use beach area on Lake Francis suitable for swimming during summer. Water temperatures stay cool even in midsummer due to the lake's depth and northern latitude.
