Lake Hope State Park, OH, United States
Lake Hope State Park sits off State Route 278 in Vinton County, roughly 20 minutes south of Nelsonville and about 75 miles (around 1 hour 30 minutes) southeast of Columbus via US-33. Athens is about 30 miles away (roughly 45 minutes), and Cincinnati is about 3 hours west. The access roads through Zaleski State Forest are narrow, hilly, and winding with tight curves and blind crests, so large Class A motorhomes and long fifth-wheels should take them slowly and avoid shortcut county roads. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH), about 90 minutes north.
Late May through early October is the prime window, when the campground, beach, boat rental, and lodge dining are in full-season operation and overnight lows are mild. September and early October bring cooler, drier air, fewer bugs, and excellent fall color across the Appalachian ridges, making it a favorite shoulder-season stretch for RVers. Spring (April to May) is green and quiet but can be wet, so expect soft ground at some sites. Winter visits are possible for day use, though services and some facilities are reduced.
Campground open with limited services; expect snow and ice on forest roads.
Cold and often icy; winter camping only at select sites.

Campground open with limited services; seasonal facilities closed.
Hope Furnace is a preserved 19th-century iron-smelting furnace on the shore of Lake Hope and the park's signature landmark. The short interpretive walk from the nearby parking area is flat and easy, and RVs can use the day-use lot. It is a good first stop to orient to the region's iron-era history.
Lake Hope is a 120-acre electric-motors-only reservoir ideal for kayaks, canoes, and small fishing boats. A public boat ramp and seasonal boat rental are located near the beach. The no-wake setting and wooded shoreline make for quiet paddling.
The park's sand swim beach sits on the north shore and is open seasonally for day use with no lifeguard on duty. Changing facilities and picnic tables are steps from the sand. Day-use parking accommodates trucks and larger tow vehicles.
Peninsula Trail is a short, family-friendly loop that juts into Lake Hope with continuous lake views. The path includes some gentle ups and downs through mature hardwoods. Trailhead parking is near the beach area.
Olds Hollow Trail is a moderate hike that passes pioneer cemetery sites and remnants of the old iron-era settlement. Expect rolling terrain, rocky sections, and stream crossings in wet weather. It connects to the park's broader trail network.
The Zaleski Backpack Trail is a rugged multi-day loop through the state forest surrounding Lake Hope, popular for overnight backpacking and long day hikes. RV travelers can base at the park campground and day-hike sections of the loop. Terrain is steep and remote in places.
Lake Hope is stocked and managed for largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and seasonally stocked rainbow trout. Shoreline access is available from several points around the lake, including near the dam and the boat ramp. An Ohio fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older.
The Moonville Rail Trail is a nearby multi-use path built on a former railroad grade and best known for the historic Moonville Tunnel. Access points a short drive from the park provide flat, easy walking and biking. Parking at trailheads is small, so leave the RV at camp and use a tow or toad vehicle.
Great space to spend a weekend away in!!! Will definitely rent again. The host exceeded expectations, space was clean / well stocked and he was accommodating when we ran into some car issues on the way in. Highly recommended.
