Late April through mid-June and September through October are the most comfortable windows, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and fall color in the surrounding Shawnee Hills. Midsummer brings hot, humid days and active fishing, but also mosquitoes and higher campground demand. Shoulder-season RV travel is easier for maneuvering in the wooded loops, and roads in the region remain open year-round except after occasional winter ice storms.

Lake Murphysboro is a quiet, no-wake-style fishery stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish. A concrete boat ramp and shoreline access make it easy to fish from a small boat, kayak, or bank. Motor restrictions keep the water calm and family-friendly.
Paddlers and small-boat anglers have the lake largely to themselves thanks to horsepower limits. The ramp area includes parking suitable for trucks with trailers, and the surrounding coves are good for a slow cruise or a kayak loop.
Short wooded footpaths wind through oak-hickory forest along the lakeshore. Trails are best for easy strolls and birdwatching rather than long-distance hiking and connect campground, picnic, and day-use areas.
Shaded picnic areas with tables and shelters sit near the water and accommodate family gatherings. Parking loops can handle tow vehicles detached from trailers for a few hours of lakeside lunch.
The park works well as a basecamp for the nearby Shawnee National Forest. Popular destinations within an hour include Little Grand Canyon, Pomona Natural Bridge, and the bluff overlooks at Pine Hills and LaRue-Pine Hills Ecological Area.
Kinkaid Lake, a short drive north of the park, is a 2,750-acre reservoir popular for bigger-boat fishing, swimming beaches, and longer shoreline trails. It complements Lake Murphysboro well for visitors who want variety on a multi-day trip.
Several wineries along the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail lie within a short drive of Murphysboro. Many have large gravel lots suitable for tow vehicles, making them an easy afternoon outing from the campground.
The park's mix of woodland and water draws herons, kingfishers, woodpeckers, white-tailed deer, and migrating songbirds. Early mornings along the shoreline and quieter trail sections offer the best sightings.

Lake Murphysboro State Park, IL, United States
The park sits roughly 1 mile west of Murphysboro, Illinois on Route 149, about 10 miles west of Carbondale and approximately 100 miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri, a drive of around 2 hours. From the north, most RVers follow I-57 to Route 13 west through Carbondale, then Route 149. Roads are generally flat to gently rolling with no major tunnels or mountain grades, but the final approach uses narrow two-lane highways, so watch for tight shoulders and low-hanging tree branches on the campground entrance road. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois (MWA) near Marion, about 30 miles east; St. Louis Lambert (STL) offers more flight options.
