Lake Ouachita State Park, AR, United States
From Hot Springs, the park is about a 30 to 40 minute drive northwest via US-270 and AR-227. Little Rock lies roughly 70 miles east, about 90 minutes by car via I-30 and US-270, and serves as the closest major airport (Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport) for fly-and-rent travelers. The final approach on AR-227 is a paved two-lane road with some rolling grades and curves typical of the Ouachita Mountains, so larger rigs should take it slow. No tunnels or major weight-restricted bridges are on the standard route.
Late April through early June and September through October are the most comfortable months, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and pleasant lake conditions for boating and hiking. Summer brings hot, humid days that draw swimmers and anglers, so reservations fill early at lakefront sites. Winter is quiet and mild, with most facilities remaining open, though some marina services scale back. Shoulder seasons offer the best balance of open amenities and thinner crowds for RV travelers.

Occasional freezing nights; good for off-season RV stays.
Spring rains; lake levels rising.
Wildflowers and comfortable hiking weather.

Peak boating season begins; reserve early.
Hot and humid; peak season.
Hottest stretch; run RV AC on full hookups.
Crowds thin after Labor Day.
Fall color peak; excellent RV travel conditions.
Cool and quiet; most sites remain available.
Mild winter; park open year-round.
Boating is the park's signature activity on Arkansas's largest in-state lake, covering roughly 40,000 acres with clear water and over 200 islands. The on-site marina offers boat rentals, a launch ramp, and fuel. RVers can park near the marina for easy trailer launch access.
Caddo Bend is a roughly 4-mile loop that follows a peninsula jutting into Lake Ouachita with several lake-view overlooks. The trail passes through pine and oak forest with rocky outcrops. Trailhead parking accommodates standard vehicles; larger rigs should drop tow vehicles.
Dogwood Trail is a short interpretive loop near the visitor center highlighting native hardwoods and spring blooms. It is a good stretch-your-legs option for campers. Parking near the visitor center suits most RV sizes.
The designated swim beach offers a sandy entry to the lake with picnic tables and restrooms nearby. It is a family-friendly spot during warm months. Day-use parking is adjacent for quick access from campsites.
The Geo-Float Trail is a self-guided paddling route across Lake Ouachita highlighting the lake's geology, including quartz-rich shorelines and island formations. Kayak rentals are available at the park marina. RVers can stage paddlecraft at the marina launch.
Lake Ouachita is known for striped bass, largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bream in deep, clear water. Shore fishing is possible near the marina and several coves, while boat anglers target offshore humps and islands. An Arkansas fishing license is required.
The Mount Ida area west of the park is famous for quartz crystal mining, with several pay-to-dig mines open to the public. It is a popular half-day trip from the campground. Most mine parking lots can accommodate tow vehicles but not large motorhomes.
Hot Springs National Park lies about 30 to 40 minutes southeast and offers historic bathhouses, thermal springs, and scenic mountain drives. It pairs well with a Lake Ouachita RV trip as a day excursion. Downtown Hot Springs has limited large-RV parking; tow vehicles are recommended.
The RV was everything we needed. Communication was easy, peasy, and it was set up perfectly on time.
