Late May through September is the prime season for RV travel at Lathrop, when daytime temperatures are warm, the lakes are open for boating, and all campground loops operate at full capacity. July and August bring the warmest weather and the most visitors, so reservations should be made well in advance. Shoulder months of April, May, and October offer cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and comfortable hiking, though overnight lows can drop below freezing. Winter camping is possible on a limited basis, but services may be reduced and some loops can close.

Martin Lake is the park's main motorized lake, open to waterskiing, powerboating, and swimming at a designated beach. RV visitors can access boat ramps and day-use parking directly from the paved park road.
Horseshoe Lake is a wakeless lake ideal for kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and anglers targeting trout, bass, and warm-water species. A boat ramp and shoreline fishing access are reachable by RV along park roads.
The Hogback Trail is a short interpretive loop climbing a ridge between the two lakes for panoramic views of the Spanish Peaks and Sangre de Cristo Range. The trailhead has space for standard vehicles and smaller RVs.
Cuerno Verde Trail is an easy nature trail winding through pinyon-juniper woodland near the visitor center. It is well suited to a short break from the RV and offers wildlife and birdwatching opportunities.
The park visitor center features exhibits on local geology, wildlife, and the history of Colorado's first state park. Ranger-led talks and junior ranger programs run during the summer season.
Lathrop sits near the northern gateway to the Scenic Highway of Legends, a byway looping through La Veta, Cuchara, and Trinidad with views of the Spanish Peaks. The route is paved and drivable by most RVs, though some switchbacks near Cuchara Pass require careful handling of longer rigs.
A nine-hole public golf course operates adjacent to the park, offering a casual round within walking distance of some campsites. RV parking is available at the clubhouse lot.

Lathrop State Park, CO, United States
The park entrance is about 3 miles west of Walsenburg on US Highway 160, an easy approach for RVs of any size with no tunnels or severe grades on the final stretch. From Pueblo, the drive south on I-25 to Walsenburg is roughly 50 miles and takes about an hour, while Colorado Springs is about 2 hours north and Denver roughly 3.5 hours via I-25. Travelers coming from the west over La Veta Pass on US 160 should be aware of moderate mountain grades and wind gusts that can affect tall RVs. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Colorado Springs Airport, with Denver International Airport as a larger alternative.
