Best time to visit Laurie Provincial Park

Late June through early September offers the most reliable weather, warmest lake temperatures, and full camping season operations. July and August are the peak months for swimming and paddling on Grand Lake, so reservations are strongly recommended. Shoulder visits in June and early September bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and quieter campsites, but some services may be reduced. The park is closed in winter, so RV travel is limited to the open seasonal window.

  • Paddling and canoeing on Grand Lake Easy
    RV parking available

Grand Lake offers kilometres of open freshwater ideal for canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards. Launching from the park shoreline gives paddlers direct access to quiet coves and forested islands. Winds can pick up in the afternoon, so early starts are recommended.

  • Lakeside picnicking Easy

The day-use picnic area sits under mature trees along the lake, with tables and open grass for families. It is a popular stop for day trippers from Halifax. Basic washrooms and water are available in season.

  • Shore fishing Easy

Anglers can fish for warm-water species common to Nova Scotia's central lakes directly from the park shoreline. A valid Nova Scotia recreational fishing licence is required. Early morning and evening typically produce the best results.

  • Short walking trails Easy

Informal walking paths thread through the forested campground and along the lake edge. The routes are short and level, suitable for an after-dinner stroll or a bird-watching loop. Expect shaded Acadian forest cover throughout.

  • Day trip to Halifax Easy
    RV parking available

The park's location just off Highway 102 makes it an easy base for day trips into Halifax and Dartmouth. Drive time to the Halifax waterfront is roughly 30 to 40 minutes. RVers can leave larger rigs at the campsite and explore the city by car.

  • Wildlife and bird watching Easy
    RV parking available

The mixed forest and lakeshore habitat supports songbirds, waterfowl, and common Maritime mammals. Dawn and dusk along the shoreline are the best times for quiet viewing. Bring binoculars and insect repellent in early summer.

We recently rented an RV for our family trip, and it was an amazing experience from start to finish! The RV was in great condition, well-equipped, and exactly as described. Everything went smoothly during our trip, and we had no issues at all. The hosts were fantastic—very accommodating, responsive, and friendly. They made sure we had everything we needed for a great adventure. It was our first time RVing, and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Highly recommend this rental for anyone looking for a stress-free, memorable trip!

How to get to Laurie Provincial Park

The park sits along Grand Lake off Highway 2, roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive north of downtown Halifax and about 15 minutes from Halifax Stanfield International Airport, which is the closest fly-and-rent hub. From Highway 102 take the exit toward Oakfield and follow signed secondary roads to the park entrance. Access roads are paved and generally RV-friendly with no major mountain grades, but the final approach includes narrow, tree-lined sections, so drivers of longer rigs should take corners slowly and watch for low branches. There are no tunnels or weight-restricted bridges on the standard route from Halifax.
