Best time to visit Law Island State Park

Late June through early September is the most reliable window, when Lake Champlain water temperatures are warmest and winds are generally lighter for small-boat crossings. July and August bring the busiest boat traffic on the lake, while the shoulder weeks of June and September offer cooler air, fewer boats, and strong foliage color later in the season. Spring and late fall can bring cold water, sudden squalls, and ice risk, which are hazardous for paddlers. Winter access is not recommended due to unstable lake ice.

Things to do at Law Island State Park

  • Paddle to the Island from Shelburne Bay Moderate

Paddlers can reach Law Island by kayak or canoe from public access points in Shelburne Bay and along Burlington's waterfront. The short open-water crossing requires stable conditions, a PFD, and a float plan. Plan around wind forecasts from the NWS Burlington marine product.

  • Wildlife and Shoreline Viewing Easy

The undeveloped island supports lakeshore birds, waterfowl, and native vegetation typical of Lake Champlain's smaller islands. Quiet approaches by paddle offer chances to see herons, gulls, and passing raptors. Leave no trace and avoid disturbing nesting areas.

  • Fishing Lake Champlain Easy
    RV parking available

Anglers fish the waters around the island for smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, lake trout, and perch under a valid Vermont fishing license. Boats can be launched from nearby Shelburne and Burlington ramps. Check Vermont Fish and Wildlife rules before heading out.

  • Day Trips to Shelburne Museum and Farm Easy
    RV parking available

RV travelers basing nearby can pair a lake day with visits to the Shelburne Museum and Shelburne Farms, both a short drive from launch points. These sites offer designated parking lots suitable for smaller Class B and Class C rigs. Call ahead to confirm oversized-vehicle parking.

  • Burlington Waterfront and Bike Path Easy
    RV parking available

The Burlington Greenway bike path runs along Lake Champlain and connects to the Island Line Causeway trail toward South Hero. RVers can park at mainland trailheads and explore by bike or on foot. The causeway provides classic on-lake views similar to those seen from Law Island.

  • Camp at a Nearby Vermont State Park Easy
    RV parking available

Mainland Vermont State Parks in the Champlain Valley offer RV-friendly sites that work well as a base for exploring Law Island by boat. Sites typically include water and electric at select loops, with dump stations and max lengths varying by park. Reserve through the Vermont State Parks reservation system.

How to get to Law Island State Park

The island lies in Lake Champlain off Shelburne, Vermont, roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive south of downtown Burlington and about 3.5 hours from Boston or 5 hours from New York City by RV. There is no road access to the island itself; reach it by private boat or kayak from public launches in Shelburne Bay, Burlington, or along the Champlain shoreline. RV drivers should note the low-clearance railroad underpass on Harbor Road in Shelburne and narrow lakeside roads near some launches, and should plan fuel and dump stops in Burlington or South Burlington. Burlington International Airport (BTV) is the nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips.
