The best time to visit is from late June through August, when the campground is fully open, daytime temperatures are comfortable for swimming and paddling, and the Moose River Plains roads are passable. Early September offers cooler nights, fewer bugs, and the start of Adirondack fall color, making it a strong shoulder-season choice for RV travelers. Late May and early June can be beautiful but often bring heavy blackfly and mosquito activity. The facility is closed in winter, so RV trips are limited to the posted operating season.

The sand beach and day-use area at Limekiln Lake is the social hub of the campground, with picnic tables, a swimming area, and grills. It is a short walk from most campsites and offers calm water suited to families.
Limekiln Lake is a quiet Adirondack lake well suited to canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards launched from the campground boat launch. Paddlers can explore forested shoreline and small bays with views of the surrounding hills.
Limekiln Lake is stocked and managed by the state and is known for brook trout, lake trout, and smallmouth bass. A New York State fishing license is required and a hand-launch or trailered boat can access the water from the campground ramp.
Limekiln Road continues south from the campground as the main entry into Moose River Plains Wild Forest, a vast network of dirt roads, remote ponds, and primitive campsites. RVers typically park at the campground and explore by car, bike, or on foot.
Trailheads near Inlet provide access to short Adirondack hikes such as Black Bear Mountain and Rocky Mountain, both known for lake views from bare rock summits. These trails are reached by short drives from the campground on NY Route 28.
Just north on NY Route 28, the Fulton Chain of Lakes offers a connected series of navigable lakes popular for boating, seaplane watching, and lakeside dining in Inlet and Old Forge. It is an easy day trip from the campground.
The remote Adirondack setting offers opportunities to see loons, white-tailed deer, beaver, and occasional moose, and the lack of light pollution makes for excellent stargazing on clear nights. Evenings at a lakeside site are a highlight for many campers.

Limekiln Campground and Day-Use Area, CA, United States
The campground is reached via Limekiln Road off NY Route 28 in the hamlet of Inlet, roughly a 1.5 hour drive from Utica and about 2.5 to 3 hours from Syracuse and Albany. RV drivers should expect a winding two-lane approach on Route 28 through the Adirondacks with rolling grades, limited shoulders, and seasonal moose activity, and the final stretch on Limekiln Road is paved but narrow. There are no tunnels or weight-restricted bridges on the main route, but winter and early spring closures apply. The nearest commercial airports for fly-and-rent trips are Syracuse Hancock International and Albany International.
