Late May through September is the prime window, when campground services are fully operational, trails are dry enough for horses and hikers, and daytime temperatures sit comfortably in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit. June and early July deliver the greenest prairie and longest daylight, while September brings cooler nights, fewer bugs, and lighter crowds. Shoulder months of April and October can be pleasant for day trips but expect muddy trails after rain or snowmelt and limited water service at the campground. Winter visits are possible for day use only, as the park largely shuts down services from roughly mid-October through mid-April.

Little Missouri State Park is one of the premier equestrian destinations in the northern plains, with a long network of trails winding through the badlands. Riders can bring their own stock or join guided trail rides offered seasonally through concessionaires. The trailhead area includes hitching posts, corrals, and ample rig parking.
The same trail network open to horses is open to hikers, offering routes through colorful clay buttes, juniper draws, and grassy plateaus. Trails range from short rim walks to strenuous treks down into the Little Missouri River valley. Carry plenty of water, as shade and reliable springs are limited.
Several developed overlooks near the campground and day-use area deliver sweeping views across the Little Missouri River badlands. These pullouts are accessible from paved and gravel park roads and work well for quick stops in a tow vehicle. Sunrise and sunset light the sedimentary layers in deep reds and oranges.
The park and surrounding grasslands host mule deer, pronghorn, coyotes, and a wide range of prairie birds. The region is known for its grassland and prairie birds, including long-billed curlews, sparrows, short-eared owls, and burrowing owls. Bring binoculars and watch the coulees at dawn and dusk for the best sightings.
The North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park lies roughly 60 miles northwest and makes an excellent side trip from a Little Missouri State Park base camp. The park protects a stretch of the Little Missouri Badlands of western North Dakota, with primitive campgrounds set in cottonwood groves at the river's edge. The scenic drive, bison herds, and Caprock Coulee trails all have RV-friendly pullouts.
The famed Maah Daah Hey Trail traverses the region south of the park through the Little Missouri National Grassland. The long-distance trail winds through the badlands of North Dakota for a cumulative 144 miles, offering views of rolling prairies, clay buttes, canyons, gullies, and steep, rocky terrain. RVers can base at Little Missouri State Park and shuttle to trailheads like CCC or Bennett campgrounds for day hikes or bike rides.
The park's dramatic badlands topography and big prairie skies make it a favorite for landscape photographers. Golden-hour light brings out the banded reds, tans, and grays of the sedimentary layers visible from the rim overlooks. Tripods set up easily near the day-use area with vehicle access close by.

Little Missouri State Park, ND, United States
The park sits about 20 miles north of Killdeer, North Dakota, via ND Highway 22 and a gravel access road, placing it roughly 75 miles (about 1 hour 30 minutes) northwest of Dickinson and around 120 miles (about 2 hours) west of Bismarck. The final approach is on unpaved county and park roads that can become slick and rutted after rain, so large motorhomes and long trailers should check conditions before descending into the park; steep grades lead down toward the campground from the plateau rim. There are no tunnels or weight-restricted bridges on the main route, but fuel and services are limited past Killdeer, so top off in town. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Dickinson Theodore Roosevelt Regional Airport (DIK), with Bismarck Airport (BIS) offering more flight options.
