Late June through early September offers the warmest weather, full campground services, and the best swimming conditions on Chaumont Bay. July and August are peak months and sites book quickly on weekends, so reservations well in advance are recommended. Late spring and early fall are quieter shoulder periods favored by anglers, with cooler nights and fewer bugs. The park closes for the camping season by mid-October as lakeside temperatures drop and lake-effect weather sets in.

Chaumont Bay is one of the top warm-water fisheries on Lake Ontario, with smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, muskellunge, and panfish all accessible from the park's shoreline and boat launch. Spring and early summer are especially productive for bass and pike.
The park features a hard-surface boat launch with RV and trailer parking, giving campers direct water access. Kayakers and paddleboarders enjoy the protected waters along the peninsula's sheltered side.
A small designated swimming area and shoreline let visitors cool off on summer afternoons. Facilities are simple; there is no lifeguarded beach, so swim at your own risk.
Picnic areas near the tip of the peninsula offer sweeping water views and breezy lakeside tables. It is a popular stop for day visitors driving the Seaway Trail.
The park sits along a recognized Important Bird Area, with waterfowl, herons, terns, and raptors commonly sighted. Spring and fall migrations bring the widest variety of species.
Long Point State Park is a stop along the Great Lakes Seaway Trail National Scenic Byway, making it a convenient base for RV day trips to Sackets Harbor, Cape Vincent, and the Thousand Islands. Expect flat, two-lane driving with multiple small-town stops.
When the campground is closed, Chaumont Bay is a well-known winter ice-fishing destination for perch and pike. Access is via day-use areas only, as the campground does not operate in winter.

Long Point State Park, NY, United States
The park is reached via NY Route 12E from Three Mile Bay, about a 30 minute drive northwest of Watertown and roughly 90 minutes north of Syracuse. From the Canadian border crossing at the Thousand Islands Bridge, allow about 45 minutes. Roads in are flat, two-lane rural routes with no major grades, tunnels, or weight restrictions, though the final approach down Long Point Road is narrow and shoreline-adjacent, so larger RVs should take it slowly. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR), about 90 miles south.
